Saperstein had been the
owner and manager of the
Globetrotters and Zinkoff
was his right-hand ally
until his passing. For
many years Zinkoff was
the Globetrotters' an-
nouncer during the games
they played throughout
the country, including
their visits at the Detroit
Olympia.
The Globetrotters were
to go to Israel for a serif'
of games. First Ma.
cabiah was contacted,
then Hapoel, and in both
instances the big "No!"
came from Israeli au-
thorities: the cost was
prohibitive.
Zinkoff was called in.
He made contact after
contact, to no avail. Then
he went to his friend
Frederick Mann who was
soon to provide the means
for the construction of the
Mann Auditorium, the
home of the Israel Sym-
phony Orchestra. Things
began to click. Abba Eban
gave the go sign.
Soon there was reality
and at the Ramat Gan
Stadium many thousands
had the joy of the great
American basketball
team performing in Is-
rael. David Ben-Gurion
was there. So was Golda
Meir and other notables,
with an Abba Ebam one
of the rescuers of a great
idea that gave much
spirit in the years to come
to basketball in Israel.
Gottleib owned the old
Philadelphia Warriors in
the NBA, but may be best
known for his old SPHA
pro teams (South
Philadelphia Hebrew As-
sociation). In one 22-year
span the SPHA teams
coached by Gottleib. won
13 championships in 18
playoff appearances.
