THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, December 3, 1976 19 Schwester Selma Earns Cash Prize /-• NEW YORK — Schwes- ter Selma Mayer, the 92- year-old head nurse emeritus of Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem (Israel's Florence Nig- htingale), received a $5,000 award from the Is- rael Variety Club, pre- sented by Danny Angel, president of the organi- zation. Variety Clubs Interna- tional, a fraternity of show business per- sonalities around the globe and headed by the opular television emcee, onty Hall, supports sick nd handicapped chil- dren. Schwester Selma came to Israel in 1916 and be- came the country's first registered nurse. In 1934, she founded the hospi- tal's nursing school and it is the only one in Israel that receives recognition from the Helene Fuld Health Trust, the world's largest American-based charitable foundation devoted to the health education and welfare for student nurses. The $5,000 prize was turned over to Prof. David M. Maeir, the hos- pital's director general, to help set up Shaare Zedek's new pediatric surgical department which has just opened and is being headed by Prof. Irwin Krasna of New York. AJCongress Halts Bias in New Film NEW YORK — In re- sponse to a suggestion from the American Jewish Congress, Marcel Ophuls, director of the film "The Memory of Jus- tice," has removed a pas- sage from the documen- tary which had described as "somewhat racist" an Israeli law calling for the death penalty for war crimes and crimes against humanity. In the offending pas- sage in the film, the im- pression was left that the Israeli law was directed only at crimes against Jews. In fact, • the law — under which Adolf Eichmann was executed — authorizes capital punishment without re- gard to the religion or na- tionality of the victim. Inmates and Nazi Vic- tims, Dec. 12, at the Wal- dorf Astoria hotel. Arnon will join the Survivors Federation in paying tribute to its Hon- orary President, Eli Zbrowski and his wife, Diana.
