Israel's ZOA House Caters to Olim, Visitors to Mideast
TEL AVIV — ZOA
House, a Tel Aviv land-
mark and a cultural
center devoted to inter-
preting the views and
customs of Israelis to
Americans and of Ameri-
cans to Israelis, has re-
cently opened a club for
Russian newcomers who
are authors and poets.
The club gives them an
opportunity to read their
works and discuss them.
This follows the success-
ful "Neginot," weekly
eetings of Russian ar-

rain Investigation
Developed in Israel
RAMAT-GAN — Israel
has developed a new
method to investigate the
brain.
The method involves
inserting special light-
sensitive fibers onto the
brain and then introduc-
ing light of various wave-
lengths into the brain via
the fibers, thus making it
possible to measure the
changes in light intensity
caused by various brain
functions.
The method has been
used successfully on ani-
mals recently by Dr. Av-
raham Mayevsky,
physiologist at Bar-Ilan
University in Israel, who
utilizes the technique to
learn more about such
basic brain mechanisms
as oxygen consumption,
energy metabolism and
the effects on the brain of
epilepsy, damage in the
blood supply and more.
Dr. Mayevsky, who first
developed the new
method in collaboration
with Prof. Britten Chance
at the University of
Pennsylvania's School of
Medicine, has added a-few
refinements in the course
of his experiments, nota-
bly, the application of the
method on animals when
they are awake rather
than dormant. There is no
pain involved, Dr.
Mayevsky notes, since
the fiber is inserted under
anesthesia and when the
animal 'awakes it feels no-
thing.
Dr. Mayevsky believes
that the method can
eventually be used on
humans.
tists which also will be
continued. The "Neginot"
give the artists a first op-
portunity to perform
onstage in Israel.
According to Mrs. Sara
Ronly-Riklis, ZOA House
cultural director, a full
schedule of events is
planned during the corn-
ingyear. ZOA House,
which is a project of the
Zionist Organization of
America, will offer a twice
monthly seminar series,
in English, on "The
People of Israel in its
Land — Biblical and Sec-
ond Temple Period." The
seminar series is being of
fered in cooperation with
the Yad Ben Zvi Institute
of Jerusalem and the Tel
Aviv municipality.
In addition, a short se-
ries of lectures on Jewish
philosophy, medical dis-
coveries and energy prob-
lems will be held in the
framework of the ZOA
House "Institute of Israel
Studies."
ZOA House will observe
a traditional American
Thanksgiving attended
annually by members of
the U.S. Embassy, hun-
dreds of Americans resi-
dent in Israel and stu-
dents of the ZOA Mollie
Goodman School. The
ZOA House Thanksgiving
is Israel's only celebra-
tion of this type.
The regular meetings
of the English Dinner
Club will again be ad-
dressed by well known
public figures such as
Prof. Yigal Yadin, the
renowned archeologist,
and Knesset members.
A number of other
major events are also
scheduled, including a
Hanuka Youth Week in
cooperation with the Tel
Aviv municipality.
The traditional weekly
highlight at ZOA House is
the oneg Shabat where
each Friday night hun-
dreds of American vis-
itors to Israel gather to
get a taste of the culture
of the country.
