Yigal Yadin Announces Formation of New Party
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Yigal Yadin, a former
chief of staff and world-
reknowned Hebrew Uni-
versity archeologist, an-
nounced Monday that he
is forming a new political
party to be called "The
Democratic Movement?'
which will seek to win
enough Knesset seats
next year to be able to
form a government.
At a press conference,
Yadin introduced a list of
78 people who form the

"founding group" of his
new movement. Among
those on the list are: Re-
nana Leshem, daughter
of the late Premier David
Ben-Gurion; Isser Uzzai,
a former Cabinet secret-
ary; Pinhas Koppel,
former inspector general
of the police; and Gen
(Res.) Meir Zorea.
Yadin said that the
principle objectives of Is-
rael are to create a secure
homeland for the Jewish
people and a spiritual
center for the Jews of the
Diaspora.
"Unification of our
people, closing of the so-
cial gap and the fostering
of immigration and our
ties with the Diaspora are
essential conditions for
the attainment of these ob-
jectives," he said.
On the question of
peace in the Middle East,
Yadin said that a true
peace must come through
good faith on both sides.
"We should refrain," he
said, "at this point from
presenting final and de-
tailed plans for peace,
since for the present no
plan has been accepted by
the other side.
"However, Yadin said
any peace must be based
on the acceptance of a
united Jerusalem as Is-
rael's capital, Israel's
willingness to relinquish
territory, acceptance of a
single Arab state that
will exist on both sides of
the Jordan River, and
Mikva Declared
Election Winner
CHICAGO (JTA) — In-
cumbent Democratic
Representative Abner J.
Mikva was last Friday
declared the official win-
ner, defeating his Repub-
lican rival, Samuel
Young, by 201 votes out of
213,407 cast.
Young, however, im-
mediately demanded a
recount. By law, a candi-
date is entitled to a re-
count if the winner's vic-
tory margin is less than
five percent. Mikva won
by less than one percent.
The initial count after
the Nov. 2 election
showed Young winning
by some 250 votes, but a
recount put Mikva ahead
by 201.
His win means that
there are 22 Jewish legis-
lators in the House.

that Israel will be able to
hold on to areas on the
West Bank that are es-
sential for its security.
Yadin, in response to a
question, said that he had
met once several months
ago with Reserve Gen.
Ariel Sharon, who re-
cently left Likud to form
his own political move-
ment. He said that he
welcomes Sharon's move
and that he will accept
anyone who feels that he
could join the Democratic
Movement on the basis of
the principles he has
enumerated.

Dulzin Blasts
Jewish Agency
TEL AVIV (ZINS) —
The Israel Government
and the Jewish Agency
do nothing to stem the de-
cline of immigration not
to bolster the movement,
declared Arie Dulzin,
president of the World
Union of General Zionists
and treasurer of the
Jewish Agency, in an in-
terview with Ha'Yom
Hazeh (Moshe Dayan's
newspaper).
Dulzin criticized the
government for failing to
deal effectively- with the
twin problem, thus creat-
ing for aliya a permanent
crisis situation. Dulzin
said the bureaucracy be-
setting the absorption of
the olim, projects a nega-
tive image of Israel soci-
ety in the eyes of world
Jewish communities and
stirs sharp discontent
among the olim.
Dulzin considers the
Absorption Ministry in-
competent and calls for
its liquidation.
Film to Ignore
Jews at Terezin
LONDON — Czechos-
lovak film crews have in-
cluded a few scenes from
Terezin concentration
camp in a new film, "The
Liberation of Prague."
However, according to
the International Council
of Jews from Czechos-
lovakia, Hviczda Radio
says the film will focus on
the May 2, 1945 execution
of 50 "leading per-
sonalities of the
anti'Fascist resistance
movement, most of them
members of the Com-
munist youth organiza-
tion Predvoj."
Terezin played a major
role in the destrUction of
Czech Jewry during the
Holocaust.
both Likud and the Labor
Alignment. Some Likud
members, while noting
that Yadin's views are
"doveish" are especially
concerned that if Yadin
and Sharon were to unite it
would create a major polit-
ical force.
The Alignment is even
more concerned since
Yadin would be expected
to take votes away from
it. But some Labor mem-
bers note that Yadin's
major principles are very
close to Labor's views.
Meanwhile, some of the
earlier splinter groups
are considering aligning
with Yadin. Within a few
hours after Yadin made
his announcement the
Shinui group headed by
Prof. Amnon Rubinstein
announced it was polling
its 1,400 members
whether it should merge
with Yadin's group.
The Civil Rights Party
headed by MK Shulamit
Aloni has called on the
Independent Liberal
Party, Shmuel Tamir's
Free Center, Sharon's
group and Yadin's new
movement to begin
negotiations to set up a
liberal center made up of
a wide spectrum of views.
Putting things in con
text was former Foreign
Minister Abba Eban. A
few hours after Yadin's
announcement, Eban
looked at his watch and
quipped: "Two hours
have already past — and
no new party has been es-
tablished."
