parsley, hard-cooked egg,

meat dishes . . . Other

WHEN "WORDS and
Music" first played the
Music Hall Center in
1975, it duplicated the
critical and public
acclaim it had earned on
Broadway and in Eng-
land . . . That led natur-
ally to the upcoming en-
gagement that will fea-
ture performances every
evening for two weeks
from Monday through
Dec. 5, excluding
Thanksgiving Day, Nov.
25, and Nov. 29.
Popular songwriter
Sammy Cahn's singing
performance has been
likened to "a wounded
frog," "a Sherman tank"
and as "the best bad sin-
ing in the world" . . .
However, the secret lies
somewhere in Sammy's
ebullient personality, his
superb show business
savvy and a contagious
enjoyment as he enter-
tains audiences with his
truly delightful songs
. . . Or, as a more succinct
writer put it, "a little
shtick, a little schmaltz
and a lotta class."
"Words and Music" is
an expertly woven com-
bination of not only
Sammy's song-plugger
vocals, but also his seem-
ingly inexhaustible re-
pertoire of "backstage"
stories, plus the glossy
musical performances of
the rest of the cast . . .
Without speaking a word,
Sammy's pianist — ac-
companist Richard
Leonard also acts the
roles of Sammy's many
collaborators . . . com-
posers such as Jules
Styne, Jimmy Van
Heusen, Saul Chaplin,
Jimmy McHugh, Gene
DePaul and Nicholas
Brodszky . . . Three of
his cast duplicate the
Andrews Sisters' famous
recording of Sammy's
first big hit, "Bei Mir Bist
Du Shoen."
Any display of Sammy's
songs must, of course, be
headed by his four
Academy Award winners,
"Three Coins In The Foun-
tain," "High Hopes," "All
The Way" and "Call Me Ir-
responsible" . . . But the
list goes on almost forever
with such hits as "Day by
Day," "It's Magic," "I'll
Walk Alone," "Let It
Snow" and a zillion more
. . . The "Words and
Music" cast do about 40.)
Another variation that
keeps this show from
being a "then I wrote"
type is that, in his expla-
nations of how a song is
written, Sammy even
uses some songs he didn't
write . . . He uses "You'll
Never Know" written by
Mack Gordon and Harry
Wayne, and in explaining
lead-in verses, he does the
seldom-heard verse to
Irving Berlin's "White
Christmas." . . . When

talking about special ma-
terial, Sammy performs a
Las Vegas version of
"Fiddler On The Roof,"
with songs like "Crap-
shooter, Crapshooter"
and "Once I Was A Rich
Man." . . . He also does
some special material
that he wrote for pals
Dean Martin and Frank
Sinatra, but most of that
can't be written here.
CONSUMERS FOR
Pure Food asks . . . "Did
you know . . . according'
to Food and Nutrition
News, Americans are
spending $670 million a
year for 600 million
pounds of-chewing gum.
This averages out to 175
pieces of gum per person.
What are the ingre-
dients? Synthetic plastic,
waxes, resins, oils, sof-
teners, sugar, corn syrup
and flavorings. Mint is
the popular flavor. Did
you know that the synth-
etic plastic used in almost
all the gum we chew
today is provided by a
manufacturer of explo-
sives?"
