Detroit Slaughterhouse Strike Affecting Price of Kosher Meat

Allan A. Cohen, presi-
dent of the Detroit Area
Retail Kosher Meat
Dealers Association, gave
the Jewish News a state-
ment this week about the
continuing meat strike in
the area:
"As of Monday, we are
now entering the seventh
week of the
slaughterhouse strike,
which
has
stopped

•

slaughtering of all meats,
lamb and veal in the
Greater Detroit area for
kosher and non-kosher
slaughtering.

"SuppMs of fresh-
slaughtered meat, espe-
cially kosher, have been
greatly curtailed by the
strike. Under normal
conditions there are five
slau • hterhouses which

slaughter meat for the
kosher industry, two of
which handle veal and
lamb and the other three
handle beef.
"At the present time, all
veal and lamb have been
stopped from being
slaughtered and only one
beef house is at the pre-
sent time doing any
slaughtering.
