She cited the activities of Fannie Neumann as a dramatist, writer and program di- rector for Hadassah, and those of Emanuel Yael Rom, fourth gen- eration Israeli, presently vice president of academic affairs and head of the compensatory education program at the Technion, the Israel In- stitute of Technology in Haifa, the equivalent of the American MIT, was Israel's first military pilot in the crucial 1956 Sinai Campaign. Then she had an important role with the El Al Israel Air- lines and later was a pilot for the Israel Arkia Air- lines. She shared her ex- perience and knowledge with more than a score of Greater Detroit groups during a two-week stay as Scholar-in-Residence representing the Jewish Agency. Her emphasis in the YAEL ROM nearly two dozen lectures she delivered here was on life in Israel. Deviating from the re- portorial on the Israeli high education programs, Mrs. Rom expressed the hope that young American Jews would pursue their collegiate careers in Is- rael. She pointed out that students are given a three-month preparatory course in Ulpanim of the universities and that the studies in college cur- ricula match those of the best schools anywhere. She pointed to Techn- ion, the acknowledged MIT — Massachusetts Institute of Technology — as evidence of the high rank of the Israeli col- leges sifice MIT and Technion share equal status in academic ranks. "There is an econmic value in Americans studying in Israel," Mrs. Rom said. Chess Olympiad Continuing HAIFA (JTA) — Teams from 48 countries are competing in the 22nd In- ternational Chess Olym- piad which has entered its third week in a relaxed atmosphere. The International Chess Federation (FIDA), selected Israel to be the host country for the first time in 12 years. Libya set up its own counter - tournament which was promptly dis- qualified by FIDA. But the Arabs were careful not to give their teams of- ficial status in order to avoid sanctions by FIDA. The Soviet Union and the rest of the Communist bloc are boycotting the Haifa games. But they did not go to Libya. The Russians, however, are participating indi- rectly in the FIDA Con- gress which is being held here simultaneously with the Olympiad. They have sent chess problems for solution by experts. Yugoslavia and Hungary sent delegates to the Con- gress. Some of the best players on the Israeli team are recent immi- grants from the Soviet Union — Grand Master Vladimir Lieberson, Roman Djindjichashvilli and Leon Lederman on the men's team and Olga Podgrzeneskaya and Luba Kristal among the women. The FIDA Congress, meanwhile, has many political problems on its agenda. These include membership application from the PLO and the question of ousting South Africa. The PLO bid was postponed until the next Congress. PLO Returning to Border Zone TEL AVIV (JTA) — Lebanese villagers com- ing to Israel through the border fence have re- ported new terrorist at- tempts to infiltrate Southern Lebanon and re-occupy the strong- holds near the Israeli Border that they aban- doned when the Lebanese civil war broke out nearly two years ago. The villagers, including local Druze, indicated that they were resisting terrorist demands and were prepared to fight. The terrorists are re- entering Southern Leba- non with the apparent consent of Syrian forces. Reports from other sources said the Palestine Liberation Army and ter- rorist units were moving armored vehicles to points some 25 kilometers from the Israeli border. all living costs. A four- year college career in Is- rael can be acquired for $8,000, covering tuition and living costs and pro- viding for tours to see the country. The low cost permits parents to visit the students and the bur- dens are decreased." Mrs. Rom's concern in urging American youths to study in Israel was, however, for the major reason of assuring a link of Jewish youth with their heritage, with their people and with their families. "The fear of youth turning away can thus be averted," she de- clared. Mrs. Rom specified her interest in a major project, the establishment of the Neveh Yair International Recreation and Sport Center for the Disabled. This sports center is being established in the name of Yair Swet, a sec- ond cousin of Mrs. Rom's husband, Prof. Joseph Rom, head of the aeronautical department at the Technion. Yair Swet, son of Zvi. Swet, cousin of Prof. Rom, died on the Golan Heights dur- ing the Yom Kippur War. The senior Swet was dis- abled in World War II and initiated the idea of buil- dig a center for the dis- abled. Neveh Yair has com- plete Israeli government endorsement, but gov- ernment agencies indi- cated that funds for the project are not available at present. A Chicago group has undertaken to plege $1,000,000 and funds are being sought elsewhere. Mrs. Rom ex- pressed the hope. that gifts will be forthcoming from Detroiters. They may be sent to Neveh Yair Swet, 6 Bloch St., Tel Aviv, Israel. PROF ROM Prof. and Mrs. Rom are members of the Likud Is- rael opposition party that opposes the ruling coali- tion. Mrs. Rom has been urged to be a candidate for the Knesset and Prof. Rom to seek the mayor- alty of Haifa. Their deci- sions will be made in Feb- ruary when the candi- dates will be lined up for the approaching Israeli elections. The Sephardic Brotherhood of America was organized in 1915.
