Flawless in her rendi- tion on Nov. 4, at Ford Auditorium, in her ap- pearance with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, she gave to the Saint-Saens Concerto No. 2 such sig- nificance that she over- shadowed all previous displays of genius in her work on the piano. Ruth Laredo earns first rank position with the greatest of pianists of this age, thanks to a maturity that is earning for her recognition wherever she appears. For the Detroit audi- ences who heard her at Ford Auditorium last week-end, Ruth Laredo was a blessing. She had her roles with the Music Study Club, later as a sol- oist at a Balfour Concert of the Zionist Organization of Detroit, and at other im- portant functions. She studied with Rudolf Serkin at the Cur- tis Institute in Philadel- phia and has long been associated with the Marlboro Festival. She has performed with the major U.S. symphonies, including the New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Cleveland, and has made the first complete record- ing of the 10 Scriabin piano sonatas. Miss Laredo was the first musician ever to receive the Winston Churchill Traveling Fellowship, which she won in 1973. Adding glamor to the concerts that featured Ruth Laredo was the ap- pearance of Hiroyuki Iwaki as conductor of the Detroit Symphony Or- chestra. Born in Tokyo, Iwaki studied at Tokyo's Toho Conservatory and was ap- pointed assistant conduc- tor of the NHK Symphony, of which he became chief conductor in 1956. In recent years he has appeared on this conti- nent as guest conductor of the Minnesota, At- lanta, Detroit, New Or- leans and Toronto or- chestras. In 1973, he as- sumed the post of the chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony. Mickey Berkowitz, who was a star with Mac- cabi Tel Aviv prior to last year, has rejoined his team after a stay in the United States. Berkowitz wanted to attend an American col- lege, and after trying without success to enter Duke University ended up at Nevada-Las Vegas. Unfortunately for Ber- kowitz, the Las Vegas team was just loaded with talent, and as a consequ- ence the Israeli star rarely performed with the varsity five. Despite the glamor of American basketball, the former all-time junior star of Israel decided to cast his lot once again with his Maccabi teammates after contracting for a tidy sum plus receiving a guarantee that he would be estab- lished in the sporting goods business, much as Israel's hoop idol Tal Brody has been set up by the Maccabi basketball organization Berkowitz had dreams of becoming the first Is- raeli player to break into the U.S. professional ranks. Now that there is but one professional league in the United States, Berkowitz realized that his chances for ever making the grade were very slim and de- cided to take what insid- ers advised us is a very lucrative Maccabi con- tract.
