Architect at U-M
Wallenberg Talk
Architect Rudolf Ar-
nheim, who emigrated
from Nazi Germany in
1940, drew a capacity au-
dience of 350 at the recent
1976 Raoul Wallenberg
lecture sponsored by the
University of Michigan
College of Architecture
and Urban Planning.
The annual lecture
memorializes Swedish
national Raoul Wallen-
berg, a U-M graduate
credited with saving the
lives of thousands of Jews
in Budapest during
1944-45.
Following Russian oc-
cupation of Budapest,
Wallenberg was arrested
by the Soviets and disap-
peared. The Russians re-
ported that he died, but
there have been several
reports since 1945 that
Wallenberg is still alive in
a Russian prison.
Arnheim, emeritus pro-
fessor from Harvard Uni-
versity, talked about the
drawbacks of "planned
obsolescence in build-
ings" and non-permanent
structures.
