Dr. Friedlaender, who has been in active prac- tice in partnership with his brother, Dr. Sidney Friedlaender, for many; years, is being honored also by the Zionist corn- munity for his family's pioneering efforts in the movement. His father, Leo Fried- laender, was a co-founder here of the Zionist En- gineering Society in the early years of Zionist pioneering, and the en- tire family has been linked with the move- ment. Dr. Friedlaender has been a vice president of the Zionist Organization of Detroit, was chairman of a Balfour Concert and is a participant in numerous other movements. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., Dr. Friedlaender and his family came to Detroit in 1916 when his father became involved in the automotive industry. He attended Northern Dr. Alex S. FRIEDLAENDER High School where as a first chair clarinetist he was chosen to play in the all-city high school or- chestra and band and in a special evening sym- phony group of high school students. He entered the College of the City of Detroit (now Wayne State University) in 1928 and earned a BA degree in 1932, after his first year of medical school. In his junior year of medical school he was awarded membership in Pi Alpha Kappa honorary medical society and earned a Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1935 and an MD degree in 1936. He later earned a fel- lowship in pathology and a Master of Science de- gree in pathology in 1938. Dr. Friedlaender re- ceived training in psychiatry and practiced general medicine and surgery until 1941 when he was inducted into the army. During his service, he was often called upon to perform in a medical ca- pacity. Magicians participat- ing in the service were Mel Eisenberg, Jacques Minnotte, Max Ettinger, Bob Lund, Ron Bauer and Steve Zieman. Jay Marshall of Chicago also participated. The service was high- lighted by a special rite, the broken wand cere- mony, first performed at Houdini's funeral. Among the posts he has held are: the presidency of the Michigan Allergy Society, president (1971) of the American Associa- tion for Clinical Im- munology and Allergy, diplomate of the Ameri- can Board of Allergy and Ihimunology, fellow of the American Academy of Allergy and the Ameri- can College of Allergists. He is the current execu- tive secretary of the AACIA. Dr. Friedlaender is a member of the American Dermatologic Society, the New York Academy of Sci- ence, the American Medi- cal Association and the Michigan State Medical Society. He is a clinical assis- tant professor of medi- cine at the WSU School of Medicine and is on the at- tending staffs of Grace and Sinai hospitals. He is a member of Adat Shalom Synagogue and is a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner.
