With these words, Prof. Paolo Matthiae of Uni- versity of Rome summed up at the University of Michigan the importance of discoveries that he and his colleague Prof. Giovanni Pettinato have made in archaeological excavations at Tell Mar- dikh (ancient Ebla) in Syria. Most striking to Bibli- cal scholars were the lin- guistic similarities bet- ween ancient Eblaic and Biblical Hebrew, Matth- iae and Pettinato noted. The tablets mentioned Biblical names such as Michael, Israel, Abraham and Jerusalem. Nevertheless, these Eb- laic texts were "at least 1,000 years earlier than any written part of the Bible," according to U-M Prof. David N. Freedman. In discussing the 1976 excavation season just concluded, the Italian pro- fessors made it clear that more Biblical revelations had been made. One tablet listed the five cities men- tioned in Genesis XIV, 2 — among them, Sodom and Gomorrah. Another referred to a great flood, the oldest such written account known. Previously, the Gallery to Exhibit Works of Israeli Arwin Galleries, 222 W. Grand River, downtown, will have a reception marking the opening of an exhibit of works by Is- raeli artist Shalom of Safed 2 p.m. Nov. 21 in the gallery. The exhibit of Shalom of Safed's works in temp- era, acrylic, tapestry and lithograph will open Wednesday and continue until Nov. 30. For infor- mation, call the gallery, 965-6510. oldest known reference to the flood story had been a Sumerian tablet from 1800 B.C., Pettinato explained. And, Freed- man pointed out, words from the Book of Job, "which has always been a puzzle," have turned up in the tablets.
