LISTENING
POST

SUCH A SNEAK was
Irene Monast . . . telling
hubby Ben she was in
charge of a Country Cor-
ners ORT couples party
at Whitehall Apts.
club house . . . and that
was where they were
going . . . But a nice
sneak, though . . . with
over 85 friends there . . .
for a super 50th birthday
narty . . . Guests all
brought
pumpkins
carved
_
_
_
to look like Ben . . . and
Irene delivered them af-
terwards to a home for re-
tarded children.
One of the evening's
highlights was a surprise
for both Irene and Ben
when daughter Sandy
and son Dale played a
tape sent by their daugh-
ter Sheila who attends
Hebrew University in Is-
rael.
BEST BET OF The
Weekend . . . Detroit
Businessmen's Group,
City of Hope, 64th Annual
dinner-dance this Sunday
at Raleigh House . . .
Hollywood guest celeb-
rity Rhonda Fleming, in-
ternational songstress
Sarah Rubine and Hal
Gordon's orchestra . . .
Black tie and by invita-
tion.
"BETTER
THAN
EVER" authored by Dr.
Joyce Brothers, deals
with the theme that a
Woman who has passed
the age of 40 can make
that half of her life the
most exciting and in-
teresting . . . Dr.
Brothers should be both
in a Detroit Town Hall
appearance, this Wed-
nesday, 11 a.m., at the
Fisher Theater.
NOW THAT THE elec-
tions are over, we hope
the "ins" will exercise
their influence about the
condition existing for el-
derly folks crossing
Greenfield north of 10
Mile . . . and also
perhaps a sidewalk for
them to walk on . . . If
nothing is done about it,
the office-holders never
should have been elected!
RECIPIENTS OF A
brand new color TV set,
Andrea and twins Brian
and Bob, University of
Michigan student
youngsters of Nadine and
Harvey Miller, were
going to receive a black
and white set from their
parents when they called
to have mom take some
money out of their sav-
ings accounts to add to
the purchase for a color
portable . . . Nadine
spent the best of two days
bickering and hassling to
get the very best price
. . . and was offered a
sales job by three diffe-
rent discount firms!
THE GIFTED HANDS
of Fran Katz lovingly
molds plastic material
into beautiful- ceramics
that are a joy to see . .
Her glazed clowns are col-
lector items, and Fran
favors those whom she
likes with her art.

AT A RECENT Bnai
Brith Century Club buf-
fet and buggy racing
party at DRC, there was a
lot of commotion around
Evelyn Lewis' and Iva
Hoptman:s table . . . The
gals pooled a little money
together for some fun
betting . . . When they
hit the daily double for
over $100, the racing
form handicappers
wanted to know their sys-
tem . . . "We just like the
names of the horses,"
they replied . . . After
that, five or six personSin
the party tore up their
racing forms.
OVERHEARD. . . Wife
to husband . . . I really
don't want a lot of money.
I just wish we could af-
ford to live the way we are
living now."
SIGHT SCENE . . . Ar-
thur Klein enjoying a
good snooze after his hair
shampoo by Marian
Hakim at Charter House
Barbers on W. Nine Mile
. . . then continuing it in
Howard Lalonde's chair
. . . The customers
enjoyed the music with
envy.
SAM LEVENSON was
talking to a youngster
one day and happened to
ask how it felt to live in
the land of the free . . .
"I'm not free," the boy re-
plied . . . "You're not
free?" Sam asked . . .
"No," said the tot. "I'm
four."
LESS THAN A YEAR
away . . . but before folks
know it the Perfection
Lodge trips to Israel will
be here . . . They leave
Sept. 29, 1977 . . . One is
for 14 days in Israel and
the other for 10 days in
Israel and three days in
London . . . It marks the
first time such a trip has
received the endorse-
ment of both the Michi-
gan Masonic grand lodge
and the Masonic grand
lodge of Israel . . . Shep
Schuldinger, 548-4741,
has lots of info on the trip.
OVERHEARD . . .
Father to family, as he
climbs out of car . . .
"Well, we finally found a
parking space. Now does
anyone remember why
we're here?"

LOOKING BACK ON
Columns of Yesteryears

Dec. 26, 1947 . . . "Bit of
snicker entered the
household last week
when mom brought home
a talit she had gotten for
nephew Jerry Weingar-
den's Bar Mitzva . . . and
discovered the store-
keeper had gift-wrapped
it in yuletide paper!

CHILDREN'S DEPT.
. . . 5-year-old Gordon
Miller, son of Beverly and
Miles Miller, after being
reprimanded for inter-
rupting, explained, "But
I gotta interrupt to get
started."
