THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Dismisses Arab Territory, Apartheid UNITED NATIONS (JTA) — Israel charged Monday the Security Council debate on the situation in the adminis- tered territories, con- vened at the request of Egypt, was "part of the opening salvo in the an- nual Arab-inspired preoccupation of the Un- ited Nations with Israel." The statement asserted that the Egyptian initia- tive was taken against the background of re- peated Arab efforts "to aflame Moslem religious elings, specifically at a time coinciding with in- ternational conferences, such as the General As- sembly." The statement referred to the Hebron incidents in September, claiming that the disturbances there resulted from provoca- tions by the Arab states and certain Moslem re- ligious leaders. It noted that the Tomb of the Patriarchs, the scene of desecrations on Yom Kippur, was reopened to worshippers of all faiths several days before Egypt's request for a de- bate and that life in Heb- ron has returned to nor- mal: Meanwhile, Israel's Ambassador to the Un- ited Nations, Chaim Her- zog, responded sharply to repeated attacks by Arab delegates on Israel for its relations with the gov- ernment of South Africa. Taking the floor during the General Assembly's continuing debate on apartheid, Herzog ac- cused the Arabs of a "most disgusting exhibi- tion of double-talk, two- faced duplicity and un- ashamed hypocrisy." The Israeli envoy de- clared that the Arab countries that accuse Is- rael of collaborating with apartheid and racism, themselves have connec- tions with the South Afri- can government. Herzog declared that Is- rael's rael's attitude against apartheid remained un- changed. He said that Is- rael did not hide its rela- tionship with South Africa and that the relationship was based on the belief that the process of dialogue is the only method to resolve con- flicts. But, Herzog said, Is- rael's relations with South Africa are singled out although many coun- tries, including the Arabs, have such rela- tions with the Pretoria government and South African officials visit those countries. Herzog responded to last week's "vicious at- tack" on Israel by Egypt which, he said, was in vio- lation of the second Sinai interim accord signed last year by Egypt, Israel and the U.S. Friday, November 5, 1976 5 Charges at United Nations He cited fresh reports to the effect that Egypt has been sending teachers to South Africa until two months ago. The U.S. Immigra- tion and Naturalization Service case against him that he falsified informa- tion about his Iron Guard ties when he came to this country in 1950 and when he became a citizen in 1957, has been pending in Detroit's Federal District Court for nearly a year. Trifa was supposed to give a deposition in the case this summer, but that was postponed be- cause he suffered a stroke. He was able to travel to New York for Saturday's NCC meeting. U.S. Assistant Attor- ney Frederick Van Tiem, who recently replaced Michael Gladstone on the Trifa case, told reporters last weekend that he did not expect the Trifa case to go to trial until at least mid-1977. Anti-Semitic Church Article Angers Greek Jews, WJC GENEVA — The World Jewish Congress says anti-Semitism has now appeared in Greece, in outbursts by members of the hierarchy of the Greek Orthodox Church, in their campaign against the Jehovah's Witnesses. In a recently published article by the Apostolic Deaconship of Athens en- - titled "The Jehovahs — Enemies of the Faith and the State," it was de- - clared that "the Witnes- es are nothing but camouflage for Judaism; they have therefore close links with the World Zionist Organization, which finances them generously". The local press has re- flected the violent anti- Semitic outbursts which followed the popular dis- satisfaction with the American stand over the conflict with Turkey. According to the WJC, a particularly venomous ar- ticle by Archimandrite Vasilopoulos appeared in the newspaper Ethnikos Kyryx. And a new edition of the -Protocols of the El- ders of Zion was published by the editor of the news- I p'aper Christian Democ- racy. The Central Board of Jewish Communities of Greece made a public statement denying any connection whatsoever between Judaism and the Witnesses, and sent a note of protest to the Ar- chbishop of Athens, Pri- mate of the Greek Or- thodox Church. Dr. D. C. Magliveras, public relations director of the board, in a meeting with a senior church offi- cial, was informed that the Archbishop of Athens and the Whole of Greece had ordered that no parallels were to be drawn between the Wit- • nesses of Jehovah and Judaism, in any ,official publication of the, church. The editor of the news- paper Ethnikos Kyryx explained to the Central Board that only due to "an error" was the article by Archimandrite Vas- ilopoulos published. Archimandrite Vas- ilopoulos, who , is also fighting against the offi- cial Greek Orthodox Church, has since been stripped of all authority . Genuine suede trim and leather buttons.
