THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, November 5, 1976 13 Sharon Says Arms to Arabs Can Bring War NEW YORK (JTA) — Gen. (Res.) Ariel Sharon, the Israeli officer who led the Suez Canal crossing during the Yom Kippur War, warned that the U.S. role in the last three years as a major arms supplier to the Arabs can cause a new Mideast war. Sen. Percy Seeks Fuel Independence CHICAGO — Senator "harles H. Percy (R-I11.) id that he will seek progress toward energy independence in the next session of Congress be- cause the U.S. must not become the "future hos- tage" of foreign energy suppliers. Speaking to the Zionist Organization of Chicago at the North Shore Hil- ton, Percy said: "We can- not allow the oil- producing countries to gain increasing influence over our national life and our foreign policy." He said he obtained the fi- gures from the United States Congressional Re- cord. The Arabs, Sharon said, received about $11 billion in U.S. military aid since 1974, while the Soviet Union supplied the Arabs during the same period the equivalent of $6 billion in arms. Great Britain and France, ac- cording to Sharon, supplied the Arabs with another $3 billion worth of arms. Military aid to Israel from the U.S. (its only source of weapons) since the Yom Kippur War and including 1977 is, accord- ing to Sharon, the equal of $5.5 billion. "All the contentions of American officials about a policy aimed at a bal- ance of power between Israel and the Arabs have no grounds in reality," Sharon stated, claiming that two major arsenals are being built in the Mideast: one, in Saudi Arabia by the U.S.; and the other in Libya by the Soviet Union. Sharon contended that EARLY DEADLINE The Jewish News will have an early deadline of noon Fri- day, Nov. 19, for local publicity items to ap- pear in the issue of Nov. 26. He said this was proven in the Yom Kippur War when Mirage jets supplied by France to Libya were used by the Egyptians. Turning to the second Sinai interim agreement signed between Israel and Egypt, September, 1975, Sharon contended that Egypt and the U.S. alike violated the agree- ment. He said that the number of Egyptian troops east of the Suez Canal is three times larger than the ag- reement allows. He also accused Egypt of violating the political part of the agreement, where it was stated that Egypt will refrain from anti-Israel actions, dip- lomatic and propaganda- wise. "All in all, it is clear that interim agreements did not bring us closer to peace. I hope that the next U.S. Administration will take action to reach a comprehensive settle- ment in the Mideast," Sharon asserted. ck s ■ invites you to view the height of European Eleigance__) The new GGG fall and winter toll 'Kissinger Using Mideast Methods' WASHINGTON (ZINS) — Political experts are saying that Kissinger's mediation in Africa was patterned in large mea- sure on the political ap- proaches he used in the Middle East. The U.S. Secretary of State is at- tempting to convince the black African heads-of- state that while the Soviet Union may be a supplier of arms, it is only America that is capable of engineering the neces- sary compromises in South Africa and Rhodesia that will lead to peace, as it demonstrated in the Arab-Israel con- flict. Kissinger's step-by- step approach in Africa is the mirror image of his method in the Middle East. It could well be, say the experts, that this is Kissinger's last great challenge as U.S. Secre- taiy of State and could crown a career in which he was able to achieve remarkable results of a p-rovisional nature, but very little in the way of final solutions.
