The memories of the
massacre at Ma'alot have
begun to fade-, except for
Israelis and particularly
for the people of Ma'alot.
In spring 1974, a band
of Palestinian terrorists
infiltrated over the
nearby Lebanese border
and worked their way to
this settlement of
Moroccan Jews. With in-
formation provided by
local Israeli Arabs, the
terrorists approached the
town's school wherein
some 30 students were
sleeping. These children
were on an outing and
hiking expedition.
The terrorists killed
several adults and held
the students hostages. In
the ensuing attack by the
Israeli Defense Forces
some 24 children died.
Israelis no longer care
to capture infiltrators and,
at the slightest provoca-
tion, will kill them.
There is a groundswell
of public opinion to mete
out to the Palestinian
terrorists and Syrian
Arabs the same form of
deadly activity. Most Is-
raelis would find it dif-
ficult not to support a

By PAUL ELDRIDGE

All men are created equal
In love and pain and fear
All men live equal
In hope and sorrow and faith —
All men die equal
And their graves unite and merge
All blood is pumped
From one central heart —
All breath is drawn
From one central mouth
The sun warms the white skin
and the black skin and the yellow
skin—
The moon illumines the puddle
The rain has scooped
At the pariah's door
As it illumines the sea
Which girdles the nation
Of his strutting lord —
All men are created equal
And live equal -
And die equal —

The Earth is indivisible

Rivers heal and bind
The ruptured shores
And mountains seal
The planetary wounds —
Demolish the gates
Remove the watchmen
Burn the passports —
There are no strangers
In strange lands
All tongues are sacred
All faiths are holy
And he who builds his altar
In his bosom's nave
Is also priest
Ordained divinely.
All men are created equal
And live equal
And die equal —
Equal blood
And equal breath
Equal flesh
And equal soul.

Where You Get The Beautiful
Invitations People Talk About

Jewish terrorist move-
ment whose only function
would be .to kill Arabs in
Syria, Lebanon and Iraq.
The natural question
one might ask Israelis is
why such a movement
has not been created.
A factory worker in Tel
Aviv gave his viewpoint.
"How can I ask any fellow
Israeli to do what I cannot.
I am not capable of indis-
criminately killing chil-
dren or defenseless civi-
lians."
A kibutz member from
the upper Galilee said he
believes that "the con-
cept of terrorism is
anathema to the Judeo-
Christian concepts of
morality. I have partici-
pated in three wars and
have been ill after killing
armed soldiers, I could
not tolerate acts of mur-
der and call myself moral.
We cannot descend to
that level. God knows
that I hate these misera-
ble cowards; I would go
after them with bare
hands, but I could not kill
women and children."
Today, in Ma'alot, the
children attend the
school under the constant
vigil of armed parents
and paramilitary person-
nel. No classes are held in
the room where the 24
children were slain. On
the door a simple sign ex-
plains that the children
no longer wish to learn of
the various facets of
man's accomplishments
. . . in this room.
