Church-State Cases
Issued in Report

NEW YORK — A total
of 47 cases affecting
church-state separation
and religious liberty are
currently pending in
state and Federal courts
across the country, the
American Jewish Con-
gress reported last week
in releasing its annual
"docket" of lawsuits deal-
ing with government aid
to sectarian schools,' re-
ligious practices in public
institutions and similar
issues.
A spokesman for the
AJCongress, commenting
on the report, said that
the 47 cases "deal primar-
ily with how constitu-
tional principles are to be
applied rather than with
the formulation of the
principles themselves."
The docket describes 47
cases in active litigation
as of Aug. 1, 1976. Of th-
ese, 19 concern some form
of governmental assis-
tance to sectarian schools
and colleges, nine deal
with cases of "establish-
ment" of religion, and 12
are cases on "free exer-
cise" of religion.
