Israeli Forests Valuable Resource

PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL

Israeli forests serve
manifold purposes, from
soil conservation and rec-
reation to protective
shelter belts around cul-

tivated fields and urban
centers.
A total of 112 working
days are required to es-
tablish one acre of forest.

NEW YORK — The
first comprehensive, ob-
jective examination of
the views of Samson
Raphael Hirsch (1808-88),
the leading figure of
Jewish orthodoxy in 19th
Century Germany has
been authored by Dr.

Noah H.

Kosenbloom,

professor of Hebraic

Jewish Population
Study Undertaken

JERUSALEM (ZINS)
— A study by Professor
Robert Baki of the Heb-
rew University points out
that from the year 1800
the Jewish population
world-wide grew from 2.5
million to 16.7 million in
1940.

Aside from the Nazi ex-
termination of one-third
of the Jewish people, a
significant number has
been lost in mixed mar-
riages which now average
about 30%. A further at-
trition is due to the de-
clining birth rate
amongst Jews which, the
study says, is at least 35%
lower than the average
among non-Jews.

The study also calls at-
tention to the situation in
Israel where there are
few mixed marriages and
where the birth rate is
significantly higher than
among Jews in the Dias-
pora. In Israel the birth
rate is still higher than
the rate of mortality, but
the opposite is true with
respect to Diaspora
Jewry.

sity.
The work has been pub-
lished on the 100th an-
niversary of Hirsch's es-
tablishment of separatist
Orthodox Jewish com-
munities in Europe.

Published by The
Jewish Publication Soci-
ety of America, the 480
page volume, "Tradition
in an Age of Reform",
seeks to set forth Hirsch's
religious philosphy "as he
intended to convey it at
his time - — a philosophy,
Dr. Rosenbloom con-
tends, "that has retained
its validity for our day as
well."
