One of the largest Re-
form synagogues on the
eastern seaboard, Temple
Israel of Boston, has an-
nounced that though its
rabbis will not officiate at
mixed marriages, mixed
married couples are wel-
come to join the 1700-
family congregation with
no questions asked.
The policy statement
was made by Rabbi Ro-
land R. Gittelsohn in the
Temple Israel Bulletin, in
which he said that,"no in-
termarried couple apply-
ing for membership in
Temple Israel is asked
any questions as to
whether the non-Jewish
member did or did not of-
ficially convert to
Judaism."
Rabbi Gittelsohn added
that "we assume that the
act of applying for mem-
bership in itself signals
that such a couple consid-
ers itself to be Jewish and
wishes to be identified in
this manner. Such self-
identification suffices for
us. Those couples are
readily and warmly ac-
cepted as members of the
congregation."
He also declared that the
refusal by him and Rabbi
Paul J. Citrin to officiate at
mixed marriages "does
not in any way indicate
that we have rejected or
repudiated" mixed mar-
riage couples.
In discussing implica-
tions of the policy in rela-
tion to various aspects of
congregational activities,
Rabbi Gittelsohn said'
"the overwhelming num-
ber of reactions" from
congregants "that have
come to me personally
approve my recent bulle-
tin statement" on accep-
tance of mixed marriage
couples.
He also added "I have
detected no discrimina-
tion or prejudice what-
ever against couples who
have mix married, re-
gardless of whether or
not the original Christian
partner was or was not
converted to Judaism."
Rabbi Gittelsohn also
said that "children of
mixed marriages are as-
sumed to be Jewish if
their parents became
members of the con-
gregation and enroll
their children in the re-
ligious school."
Asked whether conver-
sion would be required of
an adult child of a mixed
couple in the congregati-
jon who wanted to marry
an adult child of a Jewish
couple, Rabbi Gittelsohn
replied that this had not
happened at Temple Israel
but that he, personally,
would officiate at such a
ceremony, "provided that
the individual.in question
had received a Jewish
education and celebrated a

Reform Rabbi Will Not Bar Mixed

so because there was
"some misunderstand-
ing" among congregatns,
stimulated by the stated
policy of refusing to of-
ficiate at mixed mar-
riages, as to what the
rabbis' attitudes were
concerning membership
"by such couples once
they have already mar-
ried."
He added it was "not
my conscious intention"
to use the policy state-
ment "as a device to re-
cruit new membership."
He also was asked
whether there were any
restrictions on non-
Jewish spouses serving as
officers or board mem-
bers of the congregation.
He said there had never
been a case of a non-
converted congregation
member being nominated
for such a congregational
post, but that "my guess
would be that such a per-
son would not be eligible
in these capacities with-
out conversion."
