Stating that preven- tion of the spread of crime in the suburbs will in the long run be an aid to the neighboring large cities, Judge Clarkson said that the judges must exercise judgment and compas- sion while giving the community assurance that there will be no di- minution in warnings to criminals and punish- ments for crime. Expressing concern over the numerous crimes that have caused consternation in houses of worship, religious in- stitutions and schools, Clarkston said that public structures as well as pri- vate homes, large gather- ings as well as individuals in their homes, must have protection of the law and the judiciary has an im- portant obligation in as- suring it. "The public is entitled to the judge's view in dealing with dangerous criminals and should be consulted when paroles are planned," Judge Clarkson said. "That's vital," he said, "but it needs also a look into the obligation to be certain that dangers are avoided in dealing with dangerous people. "This is where the judiciary becomes a vital factor, and I consider my- self obligated to be on guard in an obligation to make the law a workable instrument." Judge Clarkson, who JUDGE CLARKSON was mayor of Southfield for eight years and is presently Judge of the 46th District Court, is candidate for Oakland County Circuit Court. Energy: A Campaign Clue Editor, The Jewish News: It is important to see how the various candi- dates will deal with the Arab countries, their de- mands for military aid, their economic boycott of firMs with Jewish execu- tives and firms doing bus- iness with Israel, and their toleration of ter- rorism and piracy. No local candidates will say that they support these things. But their energy policies give them away because they indi- cate how they will react to international oil in- terests and Arab economic blackmail. Programs which will allow the private sector to develop alternate ways of using and conserving energy, or the absence of a comprehensive energy policy, will have the effect of supporting Arab oil in- terests. The multinational oil corporations, largely Arab based, monopolize energy sources in this country — , except for coal. Such policies will invite further attempts to use Arab oil as an economic weapon. - Candidates' positions on energy policies are therefore better indi- cators of how their policies will affect Israel than are their rhetoric about short-term support of Israel. Candidates supporting energy policies consistent with those advocated by the multinational oil cor- porations will act to un- dermine the long-term strategic importance of Israel to the U.S. Candidates who will try to develop coal and other energy sources, and who are not under the influ- ence of the oil lobby, will act to decrease the possi- bility of using oil again as a weapon against Israel.
