Acclaim for 'Thief and Hangman'
Marks Tribute to Mrs. Steinberg

Tribute to the memory
of a highly respected De-
troiter who had a deep
interest in music marked
the presentation of the
second of a series of
annual concerts in her
memory at Temple Is-

annual occurrence.
Impressively narrated
by Evelyn Orbach, "The
Thief and the Hangman,"
the libretto that was
written by the late
Morton Wishengrad, re-
ceived the acclaim of an
audience that filled to ca-
pacity the Temple Israel
sanctuary.
Harold Orbach su-
perbly interpreted the
role of the chief character
in the play, Micah the
thief, in a text that is
based on an old Hebraic
parable. It is the story of a
thief who stole because he
was hungry. When con-
fronted with the noose he
asked for a final privilege
to plant a seed for the tree
of life.
Then came his chal-
lenge to the hangman,
the judges, the king and
all in the domain to pro-
vide a guiltless person to
perform the act of hang-
ing. The accusatory chal-
lenge dominates the
theme.
Numerous curtain calls
were expressions of ap-
preciation from an en-
thusiastic audience to the
cast, which included the
