More important . how- ever, Kessar said, was the fact that Israel remains one of the democratic outposts in the Middle East on which the west- ern nations can depend, and therefore it is no wonder that Israeli- United States friendship has remained strong and is becoming stronger. „Kessar also lauded or- ganizations such as His- tadrut which look after the social and welfare needs of the population. Rossen" en- graved on the countless plaques that line his Oak Park study is probably too formal for him. Because when he talks about giv- ing — and the list of charities - represented in those plaques is long indeed — Nate Rossen gets right down to business. "For Israel, I'll do anything," he says. "And Histadrut is Is- rael." Histadrut, the General Federation of Labor in Israel, has a vast network of social welfare facilities, construc- tion and maintenance of N. P.- ROSSEN which would not be possible without the assistance of Israel's friends. Rossen has been one of those friends since the early '30s. Last year, he was honored by the people of Nolan in thanks for the cultural center built with his $25,000 gift to Histadrut. It is centers such as this one, with its facilities for young people and adults, that Histadrut is constructing throughout Israel to sweeten the lives of her people. A member of the national board of directors of the Israel Histadrut Foundation, Rossen is a firm believer in that organization's life-giving task: to mobilize support for Histodrut's Israel activities through bequests and annunity programs. ISRAEL KESSAR which allows Lebanese to enter Israel for medical treatment, to visit rela- tives and to market their goods. There will be a report meeting Ndv. 7 at the Labor Zionist Institute, at which delegates to His- tadrut's national conven- tion in New York will re- port. He is a self-made man, financial hardship having prevented Rossen's continuing in school past the age of 8. Nevertheless, the 80-year-old retired insurance man and real estate broker is a firm believer in education. The future of Israel's disadvantaged youngsters is particularly important to him. He noted that Histadrut's trade schools teach young people to be productive human beings in a nation that sorely needs manpower. For this task, Rossen, who is treasurer of the 1976-77 Israel Histadrut Campaign, is ready to give an extra measure of himself. He refuses to get tired. "Every fall, when the Histadrut Campaign opens," he says, "I get excited all over again."
