Dedicate Jewish Worship Penant

NEW YORK — A dis-
tinctively Jewish worship
pennant of the United
States Navy was dedi-
cated Wednesday, in
ceremonies aboard the
USS Gaum at the naval
station, Norfolk, Va.
The Jewish pennant
will now fly from the top-
most masts of U.S. Navy
ships during Jewish wor-
ship services.
It is a Navy tradition
that the triangular
Christian pennant be
flown whenever a Protes-
tant service is held or a

Catholic Mass celebrated.
Until now, there has
never been a Jewish pen-:
nant flying when Jewish
worship services were
conducted.
The idea and inspira-
tion for a Jewish worship
pennant came from a
Catholic chaplain, Rear
Admiral John J. O'Con-
nor, Chief of Chaplains,
U.S. Navy, who began
work on securing an ap-
propriate Jewish worship
pennant when he became
Chief of Chaplains of the
Navy in July, 1975.
