Soviet Jewry Solidarity Rally at Bnai David Attracts 400 Participants

rally for Soviet Jewry at
Gong. Bnai David Sunday
night.

Shepherd said that
Jews defy arrest and
harassment to celebrate
Jewish holidays in the
Soviet Union.
He said, "Tonight, we
Jews of metropolitan De-
troit gather to sing and
dance, and to de-
monstrate our solidarity
with our brothers and sis-
ters in the Soviet Union.
"We are showing our
government we care, and
we know our government
knows our voices count."
Gustav Berenholtz,

Jerry Rogers, head of
the Detroit Committee
for Soviet Jews, asserted
that the "Soviets are
committing cultural
genocide against the
Jewish people," and
urged those concerned to
put pressure on the
Soviet government to re-
lease Jews.
He stressed that letter
writing and public meet-
ings were important be-
cause the Soviet govern-
ment is sensitive to public
pressure, as evinced by
the reversal of the
Soviets, after the foreign
public outcry to allow
Jews to place flowers at
Babi Yar.

Award "for meritorius
service" by the National
Federation of Jewish
Men's Clubs upon conclu7
sion of his second term as
president of the Beth
Achim Men's Club. In De-
cember of the same year,
he was again presented
the President's Yasher
Koach Award by the
men's club of Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
