12 Friday, October 22, 1976 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS GRAEME Pentagon Sources Believed Behind Attacks on Ford FLOWERS WASHINGTON (JTA) — State Department and Pentagon elements bent on justifying the con- tinued sales of American arms to Saudi Arabia and Jordan are believed to be behind the attacks on President Ford for his latest decision to supply new military equipment to Israel. Their implication is that if Israel can receive new advanced weapons sys- tems, Congress should not oppose similar sales to the two Arab countries. The attacks on Ford were attributed to un- named sources within the U.S. government. A re- port in the Washington Post under a six-column front page headline, "Is- rael to Get New U.S. Bombs, Scanning De- vice," said "a governmen- tal source" called the President's pledge to Is- rael "a ,clear cut case of sacrificing the national security interest for flag- rant political reasons." According to "informed sources," the report said "The decision was made Friday in the White House without the usual discus- sion and examination within the executive branch." Allegations were also made that the latest sale of weapons would upset the Middle East military balance. The sales, according to these elements, total about $200 million, a small fraction of the more than $6 billion in military contracts that Sen. Clif- ford Case (R-N.J.) said the United States has negotiated with Saudi Arabia this past year. Case, the ranking Re- publican member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has opposed burgeoning arms de- liveries to Saudi Arabia and Jordan. According to the re- ports, the equipment for Israel spproved by Ford includes two new weap- ons systems never before shipped to the Middle East. These reportedly .are the FLIR infra-red systeni that can "see" in the dark and CBU "con- cussion bombs." Israeli and U.S. sources previ- ously described such re- ports as "incorrect" and "speculative." He said the President's decision to sup- ply Israel with the arms was a "sudden, abrupt, pre-election reassess- ment which has not been coordinated with the De- fense Department." In the meantime, a top- level U.S. military dele- gation led by Deputy Sec- retary of Defense William Clements visited Israel this week as part of a 10-day swing from Tunisia to Iran. In Tel Aviv, the ques- tion of the timetable of deliveries by the Un- ited' States to Israel of recently-publicized high- ly sophisticated weapons systems were discussed for several hours at a meeting between Cle- ments and his aides with Defense Minister Shimon Peres and his experts, headed by Chief of Staff Gen. Mordecai Gur. Peres said at a Cabinet meeting that inflation has compelled Israel to shelve certain military purchases or to stagger them over a longer period. Meanwhile, Defense Minister Shimon Peres said he would ask the Cabinet's approval shortly to make a down payment on the $200 million worth of U.S. weapons that Pres- ident Ford approved for sale to Israel last week. against terrorists, and that many governments have even permitted sky-jackers to go un- punished. • • • '• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 4 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •• All Wool Worsted 3 piece vested The Finest Values In The Country no Morelli . . .
