THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 6 Friday, October 15, 1976 Inflation Threat to Services Parley Learns Ford's Newspaper Week Message: TF112, \\*HATE 110t WASHINGTON National Newspaper Week, 1976 In this Bicentennial year the traditional tribute to our nation's newspapers takes on even greater significance. It calls public attention to the continuing vitality of the freedom of the press that is such a cherished part of the legacy we celebrate. It also evokes the solemn responsibility of America's newspapers to the trust they hold and acknowledges their efforts to perpetuate the integrity and honor of our birthright as members of a free society. Our freedom has been nurtured by an unfet- tered press and by the vigilance and skill of publishers, editors and journalists throughout the country. I welcome the opportunity provided by this observance to salute the nation's newspapers and the hard-working men and women who make them such an indispensable force in our way of life. Retention of Trifa Irks Jewish Group NEW YORK (JTA) — The American Jewish Committee said that it "is gravely disappointed at the failure of the Na- tional Council. of Churches to remove or suspend from its govern- ing board a fascist war criminal, Bishop Valerian D. Trifa, of Grass Lake, Mich.," who participated in the murder of thousands of Jews and others while a comman- dant of the Romanian fascist Iron Guard in 1941. The AJCommittee statement, issued by Rabbi Marc H. Tanen- baum, national director, and Rabbi James Rudin, assistant director of the AJCommittee's Inter- religious Affairs De- partment, declared that "The continued presence on the National Council's governing body of this former commandant of the anti-Semitic Roma- nian Iron Guard . . . will seriously compromise the moral credibility of the National Council and will undoubtedly call into question any- of its pro- nouncements or actions regarding issues of public morality. A meeting of the policy-making board of the National Council of Churches was interrupted for two hours by 30 young Jews who demanded Tri- fa's ouster from its gov- erning board. The youngsters, who took over the rostrum during a luncheon break, described themselves as members of Concerned Jewish Youth. The CJY is a project of the Betar Zionist Youth Movement. The AJCommittee statement read: "To avoid taking action on the dis- missal of Trifa, a mur- derer, on the technical basis that such 'decision rests with the Rumanian Orthodox Chuech is to evade moral responsibility through legalisms." Citing the govern- ment's charges against Trifa, who faces revoca- tion of his citizenship, the AJCommittee said "It would seem that the very least moral obligation re- sted on the leadership of the National Council to suspend Trifa pending completion of the gov- ernment's proceedings against him." 11 YtILt JEWISH NATIONAL, FUND 22100 Paid Poahcal Advertising Supported by John M.
