is still denied a visa. Ac-

Soviet Jewry, he is being
harassed with false re-
ports that his mother is
not receiving medical
care in Israel because she
can't afford it.
"We have forwarded
copies of Mrs. Salansky's
hospital records to Naum

the USSR's barbarous

As Russian Jews defied KGB threats of arrest to
conduct memorial services at Babi Yar near Kiev, mem-
bers of the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry and Betar
staged a simultaneous memorial demonstration at
Aeroflot's Fifth Avenue offices. SSSJ members also ral-
lied at Columbia and Cornell Universities and at the
University of Pennsylvania. Babi Yar is a ravine where
Nazi troops murdered over 100,000 Jews 35 years ago.
The Kremlin has never acknowledged the uniquely
Jewish character of the tragedy.

The official Soviet news
agency Tass had branded
as "provocative" SSSJ's
program of sending
nearly 20,000 cards with a
Jewish calendar and
greetings from American
to Soviet Jews.
Tass accused the stu-
dent group of picking
names from Russian
telephone directories and
sending cards from loca-
tions in the U.S. and
Europe.
"Everyone knows there
just is no such thing as
the problem of Soviet
Jews," Tass insisted. The
issue is merely "p, de-
magogic device resorted
to by American Con-
gressmen to round up
Zionisl votes."
"In truth, - a SSSJ
spokesman said, "the ac-
cusation we took names
from phone books is
laughable because there
are virtually no direc-
tories available in the
USSR.
"Only the names of
those who have made
known their desire to re-
ceive mail from the West
are -listed. They tell us
these cards bring them
renewed hope. -
The greeting cards,
with names and addres-
ses of SoViet Jews, are av-
