Tel Aviv Establishes Prize Honoring Yiddish Writers

TEL AVIV — The
Mayor of Tel Aviv Shlomo
Lahat and Deputy Mayor
Yitzhak. Arzi have taken
the initiative for award-
ing• a.Municipal Prize, for
a literary work in Yid-
dish, in the name of Men-
dele Moher Seforim.
Until now the municipal-
ity awarded only prizes
for Hebrew literature,•
the 'Malik, Sokolow,
Tchernikowsky, Rabbi

'Dry Bones' Comic
Collected in Book

Germany to Israel and
the deputy mayor, who is
a promoter of Yiddish cul-
ture and literature, have
decided to include ainong
the municipal literature
prizes for Yiddish litera-
ture.
They
invited
the
chairmen of the Yiddish
Writers Association Mor-
decai Zanin, Abraham
Su kover and Yitzchak
Janossowik to work out
the conditions for award-
ing the prize and to serve
as members of the jury.
The Mendele Moher
Seforim Prize was distri-
buted for the first time in
a solemn ceremony Erev
Rosh Hashana in the
hall of the Tel' Aviv
Museum with the partici-
pation of hundreds of
guests.
Mayor Lahat opened the
ceremony with a speech in
Yiddish apologizing that
the prize was awarded so
late.
Deputy Mayor Arzi,
who is in charge of the
cultural department in
the municipality, priased
Yiddish culture.
Mayor Lahat and
members of the jury
Zanin and Janossowik
explained the motives for
awarding the first prize
to Yiddish writer Ab-
raham Carpinawitz and
to Yiddish poet Bunim
Heller. Each of them re-
ceived a sum of 2,000 Is-
raeli Pounds (about $350).

Seminary Alumni
to Hold Convention

NEW YORK — The
alumni of Rabbi Isaac El-
chanan Theological.
Seminary will hold its
32nd annual convention
Oct. 25 at Yeshiva Uni-
versity's Main Center.
The day-long confer-
ence will feature the hon-
oring of Dr. Norman
Lamm, ordained at the
seminary, the newly-
elected president of
Yeshiva University, with
which seminary is af-
filiated.
New officers for the
alumni organization will
be elected, and special
tribute paid to Rabbi
Michael Kramer,
spiritual leader of Adath
Israel Congregation,
Putrement, Quebec ; for
service to RIETS.

Americans Set Up,
Israeli Insurance

TEL AVIV — A rare
American investment in
an Israel service industry
is bearing fruit with the
establishment of a new
type of insurance com-
pany here by one of the
major insurance broker-
age firms in the United
States.
Called Isram-Aram
Ltd., the American Is-
raeli insurance firm is
specializing, at its incep-
tion, in serving Arab
businesses and families
in the administered ter-
ritories, as well as towns
and villages outside Is-
rael's metropolitan areas.

Hebrew U. Has
New Dental Dean

JERUSALEM — Prof.
Isaac Ginsburg, professor
of microbiology and head
of the department of oral
biology, has been elected
Dean of the Hebrew Uni-
versity faculty of dental
medicine. He succeeds
Prof. Mario Ulmansky.
Born. in Tel Aviv in
1927, Prof. Ginsburg
gained his PhD degree in
bacteriology at the Heb-
rew University in 1958.
He did post-doctoral re-
search in Pennsylvania,
and was appointed a lec-
turer at the Hebrew Uni-
versity in 1963 and a full
professor in 1974.1
His scientific work has
for many years focused on
medical microbiology,
especially chronic infec-
tious processes caused by
bacteria and their byp-
roducts.
