Guard Us

Te'1l-

Guard us from vicious
leanings and from haughty
ways, from anger and from
temper, from melancholy,
talebearing, and from all
the other evil qualities.
Nor let envy of any man
rise in our heart, nor envy of
us in the heart of others.
On the contrary: put it in
our hearts that we may see
our comrades' virtue, and
not their failing.
— Elimelekh of Lizhensk

Sukkot Rituals Explained

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX
(Copyright 1976, JTA, Inc.)

Jewish law requires
that Jews actually live in
the booths called sukkot
for the week of the Sukkot
festival, at least to the ex-
tent of having all their
meals in the sukka.
This was ordered by the
Bible (Leviticus 23:42,43)
where it is written "Ye
shall live in sukkot seven
days. - In the same text
the reason for this re-
quirement is also given
as, "so that the future
generations will know
that I caused the Israel-
ites to live in booths when
I brought them out of the
land of Egypt. -
There is a difference of
opinion among the sages
of Talmus (Sukkah 11:b).
One opinion says that the
latter verse refers to the
actual booths or tempor-
ary structures that the
Israelites used during
their journey through the
wilderness because they'
were traveling from place
to place (Rabbi Akiba).
A second opinion claims
that it is not actual
booths that are remem-
bered by our sukkot but
rather the clouds of Di-
vine Glory which the Al-
mighty directed over the
traveling Israelites to
protect them from the
natural elements such as
the sun, heat, etc.
The Zohar (Emor 103a)
contends that the Al-
mighty linked seven pre-
cious clouds with the
people of Israel when
they traveled through
the wilderness. Some as-
sociate these clouds with
pillars of smoke from
Mount Sinai during the
Revelation, while others
associate them with the
pillars of smoke rising
from the altar of sacrifice
to indicate that the Al-
mighty was with His
people.
If the festival or the ob-
servance of living in the

sukka commemorates the
experiences of the people
of Israel during the
exodus why do we not use
the sukka during the Pas-
sover holiday when the
anniversary of the
exodus if observed?

A number of reasons
are advanced for this
choice in date. One opin-
ion states that if the
sukka was used in the
summer or spring it
would not exactly appear
that it was used to fulfill a
commandment of the
Lord, but might simply
look like a summer resi-
dence used to escape the
heat.

Others contend that
the sukka also is a symbol
of exile, since a Jew leaves
the comfort and security
of his home to live in the
sukka. This experience is
especially fit for a date
right after the Day of
Atonement (Yom Kippur)
when the judgment for
every individual is sealed.

There are some who
claim that the sukka is an
indication of faith and
trust in the-Almighty.
The point was that even
six months after the
exodus, in spite of the
hardships the people
faced they still displayed
trust and faith in the Al-
mighty. Also, after the
judgment of Yom Kippur
is sealed we really do not
know its contents, but we
display our faith and
trust in the Almighty to
the extent that even if
our destiny may include
deprivation, we still re-
tain our faith in Him.
Still others claim that
the sukka dwelling was
ordained in the fall be-
cause this was when all
the crops had been
e, c,athered in the midst of
enjoying a rich harvest a
Jew was ordered to re-
member the plight of the
less fortunate or his own
humble beginnings.
