New -York City and raised
in St. Louis. Upoff com-
pletion of studies at
Washington University,
Harvard, and Cambridge

Dr. Sachar joined the his-
tory faculty of the Uni-
versity of Illinois and be-
came one of the pioneers
of the Hillel -Foundation,
which began there.
In addition . to "The

PBS television series, Dr.
Sachar is the author of
"Hisfory of the Jews," now
in its fifth edition and 26th
printing.
The recipient of 25 hon-
orary degrees and a pro-
lific author, Dr. Sachar
was appointed by PreSi-
dent Lyndon Johnson to
serve on the U.S. Advis-
ory Commission on In-
ternational Education
and Cultural Affairs; and
was decorated by the
West German .govern-
ment for his 'efforts in es-
tablishing university in-
terchange . scholarship

Secretary of State Henry
A. Kissinger said after an
hour-long breakfast
meeting with Israeli
Foreign Minister Yigal
Allon here Wednesday
that "We discussed in
general how the peace
process in the Middle
East can be given a new
impetus. I think we ag-
reed that it would be de-
sirable for progress to-
ward peace be made as
rapidly as possible."
Kissinger added, how-
ever, "We did not discuss-
any particular method of
doing this today."
Replying to reporters
questions, Kissinger
characterized the recent
Soviet call in the UN
General Assembly for an
early resumption of the
Geneva Peace Conference
as a restatement of a
familiar position.
Prior to his meeting
with Kissinger, Allon met
in, New York with Por-
tugal's Foreign Minister
Jofe Medeiros Ferreira
and discussed with him
the taking of further
steps towards the nor-
malization of relations
between the two coun-
tries.

Shiffman Hall. Author of
"World of Our Fathers,"
Howe has chosen as his

The son of Russian im-
migrants, Howe grew up in
the Bronx. He was
graduated from the City
College of New York in
1940, and has taught at
Brandeis and Stanford
UniversitieS and is cur-
rently Distinguished Pro-
fessor of English, City
UniverSity of New York
Graduate School and
Hunter College. Howe's
work has appeared in
many publications. The au-
thor of four other books,

lic lecture by Dr. Ezra,
Spicehandler, dean of the
Hebrew Union College in
Jerusalem, 8 p.m. Sunday
at Temple Emanu-El.
Dr. Spicehandler, who
will speak on "Israel
After Entebbe," recently
returned from Israel to
teach at HUC in Cincin-
'nati. As an expert in the
field of Hebrew litera-
ture, he has lectured
throughout the western
world and has been a vis-
iting lecturer at Oxford,
in England.
Dr. Spicehandler is a'
member of the secretariat
of the World Labor Zionist
movement. Before he
made aliya, he was a vice
