animal fats (as a residue
of a previous run) and is
not necessarily kosher.
The expression "veget-
able shortening - should
put the kosher housewife
on alert to search for the
familiar OU or some other
guarantee of kashrut, be-
fore she will accept the
product as kosher. -
Animal fats and oils are
often disguised by names
with which the average
housewife is unfamiliar,
RAbbi Goldman said.
Among these are "mono-
and di-glycerides,"
"stabilizers, - "emul-
sifiers, - "turmeric, - and
"poly sorbate 60 or 80. - All
of these contain sub-
stances made of animal
fats. These should there-
fore not be used unless
they . bear a guarantee of
kashrut, in which case,
vegetable substances are
used.
Ordinary chewing gum
cannot be marketed
without what is known in
the trade as "softeners."
These softeners are de-
rived from fats and oils
that may be of animal
origin. When in doubt
concerning these or other
kashrut matters, consult
a local Orthodox rabbi.
