A legal formula which a
Rabbinical Court recited
in absolving vows is re-
cited three times to make
it official. Since the Kol
Nidre is a long form of the
original simple formula
(Mutar Lach — it is now
permitted to you) it must
also be recited three
times.
Some contend that the
three-fold recitation in-
sures that one who may
not have heard the for-
mula or paid attention to
it the first or second time
will be sure to have lis-
tened to it and absorbed it
the third time.
