Israelis Design
Bee's Eye Lens

REHOVOT, Israel —
Weizmann Institute' sci-
entists have designed a
new Bee's Eye Lens
which soon may result in
a miniature "pocketable -
camera for use with
instantly - developing
film.
Taking their cue from
nature, Dr. Isaia Glaser
and Prof. Asher Friesem
of the institute's elec-
tronics department have
hit upon a solution that
works like the compound
'e of a bee. Instead of a
Agle lens (as in the
tiiiiman 'eye and/or the
conventional camera),
the institute's bee's eye
lens uses an array of
lenslets to form a series of
tiny images.
A piece Of opaque mate-
rial dotted by pinholes is
carefully placed over the
lenslets in such a manner
that a different point
from each miniature
image is used to make up
one large composite im-
age. This is then recorded
on instant-developing
film. The entire system is
all of one centimeter
thick.
Although Weizmann
scientists have de-
monstrated the feasibil-
ity of this technique,
there are still a number of
problems to be overcome
before the new lens goes
commercial. Color film
currently available is not
sufficiently light-
sensitive for this system,
and the production of
suitable super-accurate
lenslet-pinhole arrays
has still to be perfected.

Only a Satellite

ASHOD (ZINS) — "The
state of Israel has become
a virtual satellite of the
U.S. Every one of the fifty
individual states in the
U.S. has more freedom of
action than does Israel,"
said General Ariel (Arik)
Sharon at a gathering.
In support of his thesis,
Sharon referred to Leba-
non where he charged
that Israel acted not in
her own best interests
but rather in the in-
terests of the Americans.
"By remaining com-
pletely passive, Israel
was simply contributing
to the realization of an
ancient Syrian dream of
annexing the land of
Lebanon. We could at
least have demanded
some quid-pro-quo for our
assive stand, for exam-
le, freedom for Syrian
,ewry, but our govern-
ment didn't even have the
courage to insist on this
condition. -
Speaking of the long
term problem of integrat-
ing the Arabs, Sharon
suggested three pos-
sibilities: "That the
Arabs become full-
fledged citizens ( he con-
ceded that they didn't
now enjoy full rights but
neither do they shoulder
all responsibility); If they
choose, they remain as
residents without citi-
zenship; If neither of
these two options suit
them, they should seek
repatriation in some
other country."
