Significance of Prayer
BY RABBI SAMUEL FOX
(Copyright 18.16, JTA, Inc.)
Prayer is important in Ju-
daism.
\ A number of opinions
have been advanced io ex-
plain the importance and
value of prayer in Judaism.
Generally, it is through the
medium of prayer that man
actually establishes his rela-
tionship to the Almighty.
The Bible stressed the
commandment to "serve the
Almighty . . . with all your
heart." The rabbis inter-
preted this to mean that
prayer is defined as the
"service of the heart." Nah-
manides generally consid-
ered the act of prayer as a
benefit to man. -
Surely the Almighty does
not need man's prayers.
Prayer, like all the precepts
of Judaism were designed
for the refinement of man.
Prayer itself was designed,
according to this view, to
give man the means of ex-
pressing himself and per-
fecting himself through an
understanding of his role in
the world.
In prayer man becomes
as close as he ever can to
the infinite towards which
he reaches in the sublime
experience of prayer. In
this respect, some trans-
lated the word "Tefilla,"
the Jewish term for
prayer, as "judgment."
In this sense it means
that man evaluates himself.
The mystics in the Kabala
seem to indicate that the Al-
support of the Palesti-
nians.
Herzog said the issue of
the Palestinians and the
Mideast top this session's
agenda. Israel will again
be accused of mistreating
the Arab population in
the administered ter-
ritories and the issue of
Zionism will be brought
up repectedly during the
three-month session.

mighty needs the prayers of
man because He wants to
benefit man and wants man
to come close to Him so that
he can - be proven worthy of
the benefit which the Al-
mighty wishes to bestow
upon him.
Man becomes the vehicle
through which the Al-
mighty can bring the univ-
erse closer to, perfection.
Man thus offers prayers so
that the Almighty can
reach the goal He set for
Himself in his graciou'
desire to elevate man to a
lofty station of holiness.
While helping man is an
act of grace for the Al-
mighty, who has accepted a
responsibility He had no
need to accept, man's pray-
ers tend to satisfy the Al-
mighty into feeling that His
hopes for man were not in
vain. Man, on the other
hand, gets the feeling
through prayer that he is in-
deed an individual of some
worth in the eyes of the
Almighty.
Acts of Love
For three reasons acts of
love are more than mere giv-
ing of charity — Charity
consist of money only, acts
of love involve both personal
devotion and money —
Charity is given to the poor
only, whereas acts of love
are performed both for the
poor and for the rich —
Charity benefits living per-
sons only,•whereas acts of
love benefit both the living
and the dead.
