Three Requisites

A newly-engaged can-
tor used the Rosh
Hashana service to dis-
play his vocal talents. He
sang the prayers, to his
own satisfaction at least,
repeating the same words
many times and prolong-
ing the service until late
in the afternoon.
At the conclusion of the
service, the cantor ap-
proached the rabbi to
wish him a happy new
year and to hear the com-
pliments of the spiritual
leader for the manner in
which he led the congre-
gation in prayer.

The rabbi returned his
greeting and added:
"It is written in the
"Ethics of the Fathers."
`The world is based on
three things — Torah,
prayer and deeds of kind-
ness.' Blessed is our con-
gregation which fulfills
these three requisites. I
teach them the Torah;
you pray for them; and
they perform deeds of
kindness by listening to
both of us."

A sample of her poetry
follows:

Sabbath Eve

A city afar appears to me
With a guiet evening
o'erhead,
While the house where I
was born
Stands in the street as
- though dead.
Even the trees were
hushed,
The tired leaves slowly fell,
While the evening in the
crystal sky
Lit the Sabbath stars as
well.
And a lad swayed far away
Over an old, old tome,
Studying with ancient
melody
In an aged house, study's
home.
