AND MRS. LEON FILL NORMAN and CAROLE i Israel's consul general in New York, Uri Ben-Ari, said that although major efforts - have been made by the consulate in in- formation there is still much to be done. He said the consulates lack the funds and manpower necessary for the task. Addressing -a press con- ference at the consulate, Ben-Ari noted that the main target is to reach "the Jewish masses" in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Noting that since the successful rescue opera- tion at Entebbe Airport there has been a "honey- moon" between the. American media and the cause of Israel, he,warned nonetheless that in the future Israel could face a situation in which the media will not be so favorably responsive. Ben-Ari pointed out that for a long time the Israeli - i z\ stand on the Palestine Liberation Organization was not accepted by the American media, until 're- cently when the war in Lebanon caused a change in this attitude. Yaakov Levy, informa- tion officer at the consu- late, said the consulate's efforts in information have been largly aimed during . the last few months at political and economic groups; educa- tional systems, including universities, high schools and parochial schools; the general media, with em- phasis on non- metropolitan newspap- ers; ethnic and religious groups and the Jewish community. late, he added, also has four different radio talk shows which are broad- cast weekly by 300 \radio stations throughout the country. In addition, printed material and posters on the achieve- ments of Israel are distri- buted, he said. Levy said that at least 200 lectures a month are arraiged by the consu- late and more than 100 different films of Israel are shown at least 500 times a month before var- ious groups. U.S. Rabbinical Students Aid Brazil Jewish Schools forerunner of an attempt May the coming year be one filled with health, happiness and peace for all mankind Jennie and Sol King NEW YORK—A group of 15 students from American rabbinical seminaries are in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to upgrade Jewish education in Brazil's largest Jewish city. The Sao Paulo project is part of the SEED prog- ram launched by Torah Umesorah—The Na- tional Society for Hebrew Day Schools, which is now providing links with communities in South and Central America along with the 165 com- munities • in North America where Torah Umesorah has estab- lished Hebrew day schools. Rabbi Joshua Fishman, a Torah Umesorah staff member and executive secretary of the National Conference of Yeshiva Principals, said that the SEED project is a to establish in Sao Paulo a rabbinical seminary and a post graduate talmudi- cal school known as a kol- lel and devoted to tal- mudic research. Rabbi Fishman said in his rurvey of Jewish edu- cation in Sao Paulo that primary school students have no role models, no older tutors and no facilities in Brazil for con- tinuing Jewish education on college or post graduate level. Umesorah's Torah SEED project, which reaches out every sum- mer to communities in North America which do not have facilities for higher Jewish schools, has been involved this year for the first time with communities beyond the U.S. such as Caracas, Venezuela, and Panama City and now Sao Paulo, Brazil.
