Roll Call of Pioneer Campaigners. and Honors
for Esther Prussian Mark DSG Anniversary

Detroit Service Group's
50th anniversary, ob-
served at the annual Stag
Day Sept. 15 at Tarn
O'Shanter Country Club,
highlighted an event that
emerged as one of the
very impressive corn-
munal functions in an al-
ready anniversary-rich
year for Greater Detroit
Jewry.
While the occasion was
geared especially as an
honor fOr Esther Prus-
sian, whose 52 years of
services in the Detroit
Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion were acclaimed by
fellow workers, the occa-
sion majored in recapitu-
lation of the half-century
history of the fund-
raising arm of the Feder-
ation.

With pride in his con-
tinuity of leadership in
the Detroit Service
Group, of which he was
the first president,
George Stutz, presiding
over the anniversary
celebration portion of the
Stag Day dinner, re-
minisced about the prog-
ress attained by the
movement which served
as an inspiration for simi-
lar organizational efforts
in other American Jewish
communities.
His "side kick," an as'
sociate in _ communal
tasks during the half cen-
tury, Gus Newman, was
selected by Stutz for spe-
cial mention as a mark of
recognition for notable
accomplishments in De-
troit Jewry's philan-
thropic and social service
tasks. Stutz utilized the
occasion for additional
honors for Newman_ on
his 85th birthday.
The encomia for Esther
Prussian were expressed
by the participants in the
program, including
former Federation execu-
tive vice presidents Isi-
dore Sobeloff and William
Avrunin, and the current
Federation executive di-
rector, Sol Drachler, as
well as others.
Miss Prussian recalled
many of the important
events in the fund-raising
efforts here. She pointed
out that 52 years ago,
when she came to her
Federation post, Detroit
Jewry's philanthropic
gift was $150,000 for the
year, secured from 1,400
contributors.
The greater achieve-
; ments were described by
the other speakers who
noted that the $24 million
campaign in 1974 and the
$17 million drive 1975 en-
rolled more than 23,000
givers.
Stag Day was occasion
for Martin Citriri, Feder-
ation president, to an-
nounce the selection of
Daniel M. Honigman for
the chairmanship of the
1977 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign.
Honigman's
co-
chairmen will be Phillip
Stollman, Irving Selig-
man and Philip Warner.
Arthur Howard, De-
troit Service Group presi-
dent, presided over the
Stag Day proceedings.

Day festivities. Sobeloff
now is a resident of Los
Angeles. He came here to
join in extending special
honors to Miss Prussian

and in his address he re-
viewed historically the
progress attained in
communal social services.
