Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) . . . gifted painter, inventor; engineer and visionary, spent his lifetime achieving new measures of excellence. To represent Oldsmobile's search
for new design, technology and human engineering means to achieve a new excellence in automobiles, we have chosen the famed da Vinci graphic theme shown below.

Leonardo da Vinci, circa 1500

The Search:
Cars that must do more
than they've ever done before to
meet the demands of our times.
The 1977 Oldsmobiles.

THE CHALLENGE: To design and engineer lux-
ury and family-size automobiles to meet the new
demands of our times. More weight-efficient.
More space-efficient. More practical in every-
day driving. Meet these demands, without
sacrificing the traditional qualities buyers
have come to expect in full-size cars.
THE IDEA: A new design approach.
New engineering techniques. Weight-
reducing concepts and materials. New
production processes . . . new kinds of cars.
THE SOLUTION: New Ninety-Eights and
Delta 88s vastly different from '76 models—
the wave of the future, right now.
NEW SIZE: There's a new kind of living
room inside. The Delta 88 Coupe, for example,
offers more legroom and headroom for rear
passengers, without losing any up front. Six
passengers can still ride in comfort.
Even more surprising is the trunk space—the
Delta 88 still gives you over 20 cubic feet!
NEW "DRIVEABILITY": There you are, in
all that big-car luxury. Yet you're able to thread
through traffic with a new confidence. Take a
tighter turn. Slip into parking spaces you'd pass
up before. There's a new dimension to the
pleasure of driving a Ninety-Eight.
With its new size and 119-inch wheel-
base, the turning diameter is nearly
21/2 feet shorter than
before. New
-
has resulted
in new
-
-
maneu-
,
verability.
You'll sense‘'
it the first time
you drive. ,

NEW RIDE: In smoothness,
softness and ride, the new Ninety-Eight rivals
the best Oldsmobiles of all time.
New deeper-travel suspension systems were
designed, front and rear. Increased positive

<

caster built into the front suspension helps di-
rectional stability; a large-diameter stabilizer
bar helps control sway. Softer springs help ab-
sorb road shock. The body mounts are softer
to isolate the body from the chassis, to
help reduce road noise and
vibration. And the results
were "road tested" by new
computer simulation tech-
nology before the first car
was ever built!
NEW COMFORT:
Among the Ninety-Eight's ad-
vances is one of a very personal
significance. It's where you sit—and
how. Our seats have a new design for your
comfort. Subtle differences help you sit in a
natural posture; deep foam cushions mold to
your body. There are no springs to sag or
limit your comfort. And they're more space-
efficient, too; they take up less interior room.
NEW ACOUSTICS: We took a whole new
approach in acoustics engineering to achieve
the inner quiet in Ninety-Eight that is the trade-
mark of the world's luxurious cars.
More effective, better fitting
sound absorb-
ers were

developed. New
"super-soft" door seals help
keep out irritating wind noise.
And the ceiling above you is not only
better looking, it's a more effective bar-
rier against the noises of the outer world.
NEW CORROSION DEFENSE: Now
zincrometal body panels are used in critical

areas. Zinc-rich primers are used extensively
throughout the body. New plastisol compound
is flowed into body joints, covering seams and
welds. New application techniques reach the
innermost crannies. The result is more thorough
corrosion protection than any Olds had before.
NEW ENGINE DESIGN: Each Rocket VS we
offer has been redesigned for weight savings,
using new designs and modern casting
techniques. The lineup is new, too; Delta 88,
for example, now gives you a new choice of
260, 350 and new 403 Vas available.
In all of them, a new thermal control in the air
intake improves
operation when
the engines are
runnning cold;
a divided-
well carbu-
retor aids oper-
ation in hot
weather.
NEW DIAGNOSTIC
CONNECTORS:
In the engine compartment is a new connec-
tion to the engine's electrical system;
when it's plugged into an analyzer, problems
can be pinpointed quickly, and serviced more
promptly. When you order air conditioning,
it has its own connector, too.
WE THINK you're going to like the new
Ninety-Eight and Delta 88—especially when
you see how we've preserved the qualities that
people buy full-size Oldsmobiles to enjoy. But
come on in, and judge for yourself.

Can we build one for you ?
