Reader Defends Secularism

Secularism means not
sacred, not religious.
Secularization means to
convert from religious to
civil ownership, to elimi-
nate religious influence.
In public life sec-
ularism suggests that re-
ligion is a private, per-
sonal matter. It must not
be imposed upon the indi-
vidual. In the educational
system and in cultural ac-
tivities in general, sec-
ularism connotes non-
involvment of elements,
superhuman, super-
natural and divinity.
Secularists favored the
secularization of Jewish
life, to make it possible for
every Jew, believer or
non-believer, to belong to
the Jewish community.
Secularists believe that
it must be left to the
choice of the individual to
be religious or non-
religious, for otherwise
we would have to exclude
from our midst the most
intellectually advanced
and the greatest Jewish
leaders such as Einstein,
Brandeis, Dubnov, Zhit-
lowsky, Herzl, Ben-
Gurion, Weizmann
Bialik, Peretz, Sholem
Aleichem, Borochov,
Leivik, etc. Dubnov once
said that our failure to
separate the two concepts
of people and religion,
cost us the Spinozas, the
Costas, the Maimons, etc.
We secularists do not
consider Judaism as the
only cause for our survi-
val, although we recognize
that religion has played an
important role in our his-.
tory, because we don't be-
lieve that Jews are a re-
ligious group like
Catholics or Protestants.
We believe in. Jewish
peoplehood. We view Jews
as an ethnic group with a
common history and a
common destiny.
Consequently, it is
clear that one becomes a
member of his people, not
as a result of a religious
affiliation, but simply by
being born into it, and if
he accepts his Jewish-
ness, lives according to
the Jewish way of life,
participates in Jewish
communal affairs, helps
to develop the Jewish
lauguages, culture, sup-
ports the Jewish home-

land, he can be a good Jew
whether he observes re-
ligious practices and
rituals or not. Only con-
version excludes a Jew
from "Klal Israel."
In conclusion, sec-
ularism is not anti-
religion and not the anti-
thesis of religion, it sepa-
rates religion from na-
tionality. It is freedom of
thought and freedom of
beliefs. It is the anti-
thesis of actual or
spiritual compulsion.

Legislation Support

Editor, The Jewish News:
It is my hope that all
Jewish people will write
to their, Senators and
Congressmen in support
of the legislation levied
against the more than 200
companies now comply-
ing with the Arab boycott
against Israel and all
Jewish people.
The Jewish people may
be small in number, but if
all of us pitchin, we have
won another victory
against the Arabs and
bigots in this country.
