change has not necessar-
ily been at the expense of
their attachment to the
State of Israel and their
attitude to their Israeli
citizenship. More than
their Jewish counter-
parts they are willing to
develop a network of
mutual social relation-
ships, although the war
has tended in certain
measure to weaken this
desire. _
These are some of the
conclusions reached by
Professor Yohanan
Hoffman of Haifa Uni-
versity who has been en-
gaged since 1969 in
psychological research on
the personal identity of
the Arab youth in Israel,
and their preparedness to
develop mutual relations
with the Jewish youth.
His inquiry focussed
mainly on the years 1971
and 1975 and on a com-
parison of the situation in
the two periods.
The research was con-
ducted among Arab uni-
versity students and high
school pupils. In order to

an Arab youth as less prac-

tured, and also less op-
timistic about his future
than was the Jew of 1971.
His image is still generally
positive, but to , a much les-
ser degree than in the
past. He is now regarded
as "stubborn and very
egotistic" whereas in 1971
the Jew was regarded as
more generous towards
the Arabs.
Both the Arab youth in
Israel and in the Ad-
ministered Areas expres-
sed verbal preparedness
to foster mutual relation-
ships with the Jews. But
when it comes to the point
of implementation, it
transpires that the Arab
youth of 1971 were far
more anxious to develop
such relationships than
in 1975. Whereas the
Jewish youth have now
begun showing signs of
preparedness to establish
contact with - the Arab
youth, there are signs of
definite evasions among
the Arabs in this respect.

lieves that there have
