Preceding the High
Holy Days is Elul —
month of spiritual prep-
aration. This is the time
when the soul is attuned
to receive the message
and meaning of the great
clays that lie ahead.
Selihot, penitential
prayers, are recited daily,
sometimes between mid-
night and dawn.
Synagogue functionaries
— Cantor and Ba'al Tekia
(Shofar blower) — prime
thems/elves for the awe-
inspiring services; their
practice and deeds are

carefully scrutinized. In-
nate feelings are
aw akened in even indiffe-
rent Jews.
These stirrings, a mix-
ture of memories, long-
ings and yearnings for
things of the spirit, move
towards their culmina-
tion in attendance at
synagogue.
