It is quite obvious that even as far back as the bi- blical period, dreams had a certain significance in Jewish tradition. The Patriarchs Abraham and Jacob are related in the Bible as having received the message of the Al- mighty in a dream. Joseph regarded his own dream seriously and was the interpreter of Phar- aoh's dream. In the case of Pharaoh's dream Joseph made it clear that the real interpretation of the dream was available to him only from the reve- lation of the Almighty himself. One source of talmudic literature relates that dreams constitute one- sixtieth of prophetic reve- 1 ati o p (B'rachot 5-7b). Other sources contended that dreams are mean- ingless vanities for the most part. Nevertheless, many authorities considered dreams a serious busi- ness to the extent that a dream which instills .fear in the individual and points to evil consequ- ences requires the indi- vidual to fast (Talmud, Shabat 11a) against the advice of others who say they should be ignored. So serious is an evil dream that it is the only private fast that can take place on the Sabbath. We still observe the practice of offering a prayer to overcome the evil possibilities of a dream during the ritual of the priestly blessing in the synagogue. Whatever the relevancy of a dream might be, the rabbis con- sidered anything that would upset the mental equilibrium of a person worthy of some attention. A later source advises an individual who had a dis- turbing dream to give to some charity. WSU Book on Race Relations By ALLEN A. WARSEN In "Race Relations," subtitled "Elements and Social Dynamics," (Wayne State University Press, Detroit, 1976), Oliver C. Cox views ra- cism, as it is known in modern times, as a rela- tively recent develop- ment, unknown prior to the 16th Century. He writes that it was intro- duced by the Spaniards in the sixteenth century as justification for their brutal exploitation of the West Indians. The Spaniards claimed that their treatment of the In- dians was due to their "barbarous nature," "their sins," "their need ,of religious instruction, and because their labor was naturally due to a people of such elevated natures as the Spaniards." Years later, Cox con- tinues, the European im- perialist powers justified their subjugation of the peoples of Africa and Asia on grounds that they were racially inferior. Soon this racist rationalization evolved into a racist philosophy based on philology. The racist philosophers accepted as scientific truth the philologists' theory (now discarded) that all European lan- guages, except Finnish, Magyar, Basque, and Tur- kish, have a common ori- gin, namely Sanskrit. They also accepted as historic truth the story in Sanskrit literature of tall, blond, and strong people called Aryans who conquered the dark-skinned people of Persi and India. 0.n the basis of that story and the philologists' theory, the racist philosophers concluded that many Aryans had left their native land and migrated to Europe where they introduced civilization. "Since the northern Europeans tended to be blonds, the corollary of the theory was that they were the purest descendants of the original Aryans. Thus the cult of Aryanism was born." leading The pholosophers of the Aryan-Nordic ideology were the Frenchman Count Arthur -de Gobineau (1816-1882) and the Englishman- turned-German, Huston Stewart Chamberlain (1885-1927). Count Gobineau in his four-volume work, "Essai sur l'Inegalite des Races Humaines" states: "The Germanic races, which in the fifth century trans- formed the Western mind —, these are the Aryans . . . Where the Germanic element has never penet- rated, our special kind of civilization does not exist." Gobineau divided man- kind into black, yellow, and white races — "the blacks having the smallest capacity for cultures and whites the largest." Chamberlain in his two-volume "Grundlagen des Neunzehnten Jah- rhunderts" adopted Gobineau's philosophy and added to it a few "im- provements" of his own. "The Aryans," he wrote, "are pre-eminent among all peoples; for that reason they are by right . . . the lords of the World. - It is interesting to note that though Cox discus- ses Chamberlain at great Is THE TIME TO Place Your New Year Greetings in THE JEWISH NEWS Holiday Issue—Sept. 24 There's Woe to the world that has lost its leader. —The Talmud no better way to say /9//), Peru May Add Kfir to Air Force WASHINGTON — Peru is considering rearming its air force with Israeli Kfir strike-fighters. Other planes under con- sideration include French, British, Soviet and American models, ac- cording to a report in Av- iation Week & Space Technology. Israel is expected to make a new _proposal on the Kfir soon. An earlier proposal was based on what the Peruvians con- sidered an unrealistic as- sumption of operational requirements, which raised the aircraft's cost. length, he fails to men- tion that his main target was the Jews. In this connection, it would be instructive to quote "The Jewish Encyc- lopedia's - brief summary of Chamberlain's philosophy. ". . . he re- gards all history as a con- flict between the Aryans and the Semites; the lat- ter being regarded as a special genus, "homo Syriacus," of which the Jew, "homo Judaicus," is a typical species . . . So great is his anti-Semitic bias that he denies Jesus' Jewish origin." Chamberlain, moreover, was Hitler's staunch sup- porter. Again, when refer- ring to "Mein Kampf, - the author makes no mention that this infamous book was the Nazis' anti-Jewish catechism. Instead, he cites Hitler's opinion of the Japanese. Whenever Cox discusses the German concentration camps, he forgets to point out that the Jews were their main victims. Cox calls Hitler "the supreme practitioner of racism," but fails even to note that he was respon- sible for the murder of 6,000,000 Jews.
