eve" stands for the feeling
of envy. The effects are
characterized as affecting
the envious person himself
with unfortunate consequ-
ences.
In the talmudic litera-
ture we have references to
the effect of the "evil eye"
on the person who is en-

states that occupations
which give a picture of
noteworthy success do not
give their practitioners
eventual blessing because
of the "evil eye" that oth-
ers will cast upon them or
their success (P'sachim
50b).
Generally speaking, the
fear of the "evil eye" has re-
strained many believing
Jews from bragging about
their achievements. Some
Jews were in the habit of
wearing amulets to ward off
the effects of the "evil eye."

The expression "Kayn
Ayin Hora," literally trans-

eye." It is used when prais-

situation. Its intent is to
prevent any envy from the
praiseworthy circumstance
that would lead to strife and
bad feelings.
The most characteristic
phrase in this expression is
"evil eye" (ayin hora). This
expression is found in the
Bible (Proverbs 28:22) where
the scriptural text states
"He that has an evil eye has-
tens after riches and does
not know the want that
shall come upon him."
Here, obviously the "evil
