Rabbis Start Adult Study Project

The Conservative Rab-
bis of Metropolitan De-
troit, a group of rabbis
serving the greater De-
troit area who are mem-
bers of the Rabbinical As-
sembly of America, an-
nounce the establish-
ment of a new program of
Jewish adult study for
our community.
The project is called
The Intercongregational
Adult Education Insti-
tute and will be held on
six Tuesday evenings
from Nov. 9 through Dec.
14.

The project has been
endorsed by all Conserva-
tive congregations in the
area.
Participating as instruc-
tors in this program of
study will be Conservative
rabbis who serve congre-
gations in the Detroit area
and Ann Arbor, and in
local Hillel Foundations.
In addition, Dr. Jay B.
Stern, superintendent of
the United Hebrew
Schools, will teach a
course as an expression of
support from the Mid-
rasha College of Jewish
Studies. Cantor Samuel
Greenbaum of Cong. Beth
Shalom will add the can-
tonal dimension to the
institute.
Students will be able to
take two courses, select-
ing from among 17 offer-,
ings in the fields of Bible,
rabbinics, Jewish history,
Jewish thought and
philosophy, Jewish prac-
tices and observances,
contemporary Jewish is-
sues and language and
literature. Courses will be
given in the biblical books
of Ecclesiastes and
Genesis. A course in Tal-
mud will be offered. The
Holocaust, Jewish Mysti-
cism, and Women in
Judaism will be consi-
dered.
Study courses will span
five weeks. The sixth week
of the institute will be de-
voted to a special lecture
presented on behalf of the
Jewish Theological Semi-
nary by Dr. Avraham
Holtz, an expert in the
field of modern Hebrew
literature.
Classes begin at 8 p.m.
Coffee and cake will fol-
low.
The institute will be ro-
tated among th,e par-
ticipating congregations.

will be held at Cong. Bnai
Moshe. There is a charge,
with a reduced fee for

Places Monuments

A policy of beautifying
neglected graves and of
giving dignity to the
memory of the departed
was _given new emphasis
by the Hebrew Benevo-
lent Society.
The president, Joseph
M. Korman, stated that
with the approach of the
High Holy Days, the soci-
ety has placed 65 monu-
ments on the graves of
indigents, some deceased
with families who could
not afford monuments
and for some whose
families have passed on in
later years.

Named in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO
(J.TA) — Mrs. Ida Portnoi
of Sao Paulo was re-
elected president of the
Pioneer Women's Or-
ganization in Brazil at
the sixth national con-
vention of the organiza-
tion, which has changed
its name to Na'amat, an
acronym in Hebrew for
Nashim Ovdot Umitnad-
vot (Working Women and
Volunteers).
The name of the group
was changed earlier this
month in Israel.
