Change of Sex and Jewish Law

BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright 1976, JTA, Inc.)

Generally
speaking,
Jewish law forbids any
attempt to blur the distinc-
tion between the sexes. The
Bible (Deuteronomy 22:5)
even forbids a male from
wearing female garments or
a female from wearing a
male's garments. Certainly
then, a transexual operation
would possibly be forbidden
in this context.
Furthermore, it has been
contended by some that the
operation to change sex is
an act of destruction and
can be forbidden as
something distasteful to the
Almighty under the Biblical
prohibition of offering
something which has been
crushed or mauled, or corn-
mitting an act which
crushes or mauls or dis-
figures (Leviticus 22:24).
It should also be pointed
out that the consequences of

a transexual operation pose
a variety of halakhic
problems, such as whether
the individual may marry,
or may stay with the mate
to whom he/she was
already married.

World Zionist Organiza-
tion Executives and Leon
Dulzin, Jewish Agency
treasurer, are also
scheduled to address the
convention.
Prior to the convention,
a Zionist service and pro-
test against world ter-
rorism was held Wednes-
day at the Isaiah Wall
near the U.N. Later in the
day, designated by the
ZOA as Freedom Day,
more than 200 people
traveled to the Statue of
Liberty for a Zionist Sa-
lute to America.
