There are two knots on
the straps of the tefilin.
There is one knot on the
tefilin strap binding the
arm and another knot on
the strap that binds the
head. The Talmud quotes
an opinion stating that
these knots were or-
dained when Moses ap-
peared before the Al-
mighty on Mount Sinai
where the Almighty
showed him the forma-
tion of the knots.
Technically, the knots
serve to secure the tefilin
both to the head and the
arm when they are pulled
tight with the straps. It
is, especially, the shape of
the knots and their
esoteric purpose which is
the subject of much
speculation on the part of
the rabbis.
The knot on the arm
strap resembles the letter
"Yod." The knot on the
head strap resembles the
letter "Dalet" in certain
traditions. These two let-
ters, combined . with the
letter "Shin" which is
embossed on the tefilin
box which contains the
head scrolls of the tefilin,
comprise the word
"Shaddai," one of the
names of the Almighty.
Thus, the knots serve to
remind the Jew of his
closeness to the Al-
mighty.
Some associate
knots with the knots of
the tsitsit (fringes on the
talit) indicating that a
Jew should always be
"tied" or "bound" with
reverence to the Al-
mighty.
