'.THE DETROIT JEWISH 'NEWS Sam Beber, Started Youth Counterpart of Bnai Brith CHICAGO (JTA)— Sam Beber, founder and first president of Beth El Synagogue in Omaha, Neb., died Aug. 25 at age 75. Mr. Beber started the Bnai Brith Youth Or- ganization,. the largest teenage movement in the world. In 1924 Mr. Beber, then 2 nd a magna cum 1 graduate of -Creighton University's Law School, organized Aleph Zadik Aleph as a boy s group in his native Omaha, utilizing the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet as a counterpoint to Greek- letter fraternities. Two years later, Beber, serving as the youngest member of Bnai Brith's national board, persuaded the organization to assume sponsorship of the prog- ram which, with a girls' counterpart added in 1944, currently enrolls more than 40,000 youngsters in its activities. Some 650,000 young- sters have participated in the program since its founding and Mr. Beber took pride in the sub- sequent professional and public achievements of many of its "alumni." An AZA distinguished alum- nus award named for Beber is presented each year. One of Mr. Beber's ear- liest disciples whom he enrolled in AZA was Philip M. Klutznick, later to serve as Bnai Brith president and as U.S. Ambassador to the UN. They became brothers- in-law and business partners in the creation of Forest Park, Ill., a model for planned "com- munities. The pioneer de- velopment,-begun in 1946, is now a city of 50,000. Fanne Schubot, 69 Fanne Schubot, wife of retired Detroit Lions tic- ket manager, Maurice Schubot, died Aug. 27 at age 69. A native Detroiter, Mrs. Schubot was. - a member of Hadassah and Bnai Brith. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Dr. Errol of Saratoga, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Seldon Kaine; a brother, I on Selik; three sis- ters, Mrs. Sam (Marian) Gabe of Coral Gables, Fla.; Rebecca Selik and Florence Selik, both of North Miami Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Louise Levy, 61 Louise Levy, an active member of the Jewish and community organiza- tions and the daughter of philanthropist Abe Shiffman, died Aug. 31 at age 61. was Mrs. Levy graduated from the Uni- versity of Wisconsin and the London School of Economics and Political Science in London, Eng- land. She was a member of the Travelers Aid Soci- ety, Visiting Nurses As- sociation, Friends of Children's Museum and the Women's Committee of the United Community Services. She also was active in Citizens for Better Care, the Mayor's Commission on Aging, the Women's Auxiliary of Children's Hospital, Brandeis Uni- versity Tribute Fund, De- troit Artists Market and the National Council of Jewish Women. She is survived,by her husband, Norman; two sons, Richard and Nor- man; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Shiffman; a sister, Mrs. Robert I. Kohn of Cleve- land; and one grandson. Bessie Lebowsky Bessie Lebowsky, widow of former Shiawassee County supervisor, Joseph H. Lebowsky, died in Owosso Aug. 28 at age 91. Born in Russia, Mrs. Lebowsky lived 67 years in Owosso. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Hadas- sah and a member of the Owosso Memorial Hospi- tal Association and Tem- ple Israel. Rabbi Richmond, Army Chaplain NEW YORK — Rabbi Harry R. Richmond, who served as a chaplain in the United States Army in World Wars I and II, died Aug. 25 at age 85. Rabbi Richmond waived his exemption as a rabbi in World War I and enlisted, and later served in Europe as a chaplain as he did in World War II. After the wars, he served as rabbi to Cong. Emanuel in Wichita, Kan., and later in posts in Florida and Connecticut. He was the author of "God on Trial" and magazine articles.
