LARCO'S
Danny Raskin's
Dehoously Prepared for the
//seeming
MORRIE RICHMAN
says he'll give back the
apples he stole from
Norman Cottler's open
air fruit stand on Dexter
and Davison in 1929 . . .
Morrie says he remem-
bers stores being built on
the block and Norman
moving into a double
store which he called
Dexter-Davison Mkt.. . .
After awhile, Norman
moved to a spot across the
street and leased the up-
stairs . . . Then moved
near the corner of Wyom-
ing and Curtis . . . and
onward to Oak Park
where he built his market
and then a complete
shopping center.
With Norman leasing
his Dexter-Davison Mar-
ket to Borman Foods
(Farmer Jack), the ques-
tion in the minds of many
like Morrie Richman is
whether it will remain
the same or eventually be
converted into another
Farmer Jack.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
. . . to Marty Eisner.
CRESCENT
IF
SHRINE Club can con-
vince Jimmy Laker to
take presidency for the
coming term, it will be a
big boon to the organiza-
tion . . . He is first vice
president . . . and
throughout the years has
been successful in what-
ever undertaking he has
attempted . . . As presi-
dent of Bnai Brith Men's
Council, he was one of the
best.
22nd Anniversary and
President's Dinner-
_Dance by Crescent
Shrine is.near . . . Sept.
19, at Raleigh House . .
featuring popular comic
Dick Lord, songstresses
The Three Debs and Hal
Gordon's ork . . . Reser-
vations, going fast, can be
gotten by calling 355-3100
. . . Cocktails begin at
6:30, dinner at 7:30 . . .
Should be a whale of a
good shindig.
NORMAN - GOLDEN-
BERG (Esther) had a per-
fect day on his 65th birth-
day . . . given him by
daughter Donna and
son-in-law Larry Sklar
. . . picnic breakfast at a
park, visit to Cranbrook
Gardens (he loves garden-
, ing), hair styled, an hour
massage at Darbys Stan-
ley Steamer, lunch at the
house and out to dinner.
AL FOON AND Manny
Segal are helping combat
inner-city problems so
they don't spread and in-
volve areas like' the
Jewish community . . .
This is why they are in
the thick of S.O.C.K. (Save
Our Community Through
Kindness) which they
founded, and P.A.L.
(Police Athletic League.)
Proceeds from Al's Bob
Lanier Basketball Be-
nefit at State Fair (across
g-rom the Ford Motor Dis-
play) on road A, are going
to S.O.C.K. and P.A.L.
. . . There are eight Ron-
dek adjustable basketball
goals into which people
-

shoot to win prizes . .
The Rondeks are Al's
latest brainchild for
adults and children of any
size, tall or short, any age,
to shoot at.
In a shoot-until-you-
miss consecutive contest,
Gene Mondry of Highland
Appliance is giving a color
TV, Bill Elkin of Elkin
Travel a trip, and two Ron-
dek adjustable basketball
goals from Al and son
Ronald . . . Celebrities
are there every night play-
ing with the crowd.
It's Al's way of combat-
ing the teen-age gang
problem which he_ feels is
like a bad ?evolution that
could get worse unless
something is done about
it.
Don't ask Al about the
reserves or National
Guard at the armories on
Eight Mile Rd. in Detroit
who "sit around and play
poker on the taxpayers
money" . . . both of whom
could come in and help
the police . . . He boils
just thinking about
what's happening while
politicians look the other
way when it comes to pro-
tecting the people.
If supporting organiza-
tions like S.O.C.K. and
P.A.L. will in some way
help alleviate the very
desperate situation
which could get much
worse . . . it definitely
merits as much support
as possible . . . Thank
heavens there are still
people around like Al
Foon who care!
HIGHLIGHT_ OF RE-
CENT trip to California
by Ruth and Harold
eiss was their taking a
taped message from
Ruth's mother, 90-year-
old Minnie Shapiro, to her
son, Harry Shapiro and
granabhildren . . . then
bringing back taped mes-
sages from them to Min-
nie Shapiro.
Harry's
of
One
daughters, Marcia Shap-
iro, had.the lead in a play,
"Getting Thru The Nite -
. . . and will be seen soon
on ABC's "Bionic Wo-
man."
FOUR YEARS AGO,
Ernie Backalar and
Laura Phillips ap-
proached Jerry Weisman
with the idea of a
neighborhood carnival
for muscular dystrophy
. . . Each year, the
neighbors pitch in and
work hard putting to-
gether games, a spook
house, tractor ride and a
bake sale . . . The big try
is to at least double the
previous year's efforts
. . . and 1976 brought
them $2,500.
