Israel Dissatisfied with Egyptian Reply to Complaint

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Egypt's reply to an Is-
raeli complaint that
Egypt is maintaining
more battalions in the
Sinai buffer zone than is
permitted by, the second
Sinai accord is unsatis-
factory.
Israel will continue to
press on the issue, De-
fense Minister Shimon
Peres said.
Peres made his state-
ment after meeting for an
hour with Gen. Ensio
Siilasvuo, commander of
the United Nations forces
in the Middle East, on the
latter's return to Israel
after he met in Cairo with
Egyptian Defense Minis-

ter Gen. Gammasy on the
complaints.
Israel complained that
Egypt had placed 16 bat-
talions in the Sinai, twice
the number permitted by
the accord; of Egyptian
helicopter flyovers of the
buffer zone for intelli-
gence purposes; con-
struction of missile sites
east of the Suez Canal;
and movement of Be-
douins from north to
south in the .buffer .zone.
Egypt - had greed to see
to it that the 7,000 Be-
douins in the buffer zone
would stay in its northern
end.
Peres noted that the UN

Goldwater Endorses Jewish
Senate Candidate in Arizona

WASHINGTON (JTA)
— Sen. - Barry Goldwater
(R-Ariz.) has endorsed
Rep. Sam Steiger for the
Republican nomination
for a U.S. Senate seat
from Arizona and urged
that "we must put an
end" to anti-Semitism in
the Arizona Senatorial
campaign.

Jerusalem Hilton
Features Tours

NEW YORK — The
Jerusalem Hilton in Is-
rael is featuring self-
guided walking tours of
Jerusalem and is provid-
ing maps to accompany
the tours.
The walking tours
begin at the hotel and ex-
tend in three directions.
The map is color- and
number-coordinated with
the tours, - which are de-
scribed on the reverse
side.
The tours include new
and old Jerusalem and
the Mea Shearim religi-
ous quarter.

"In all my years as a
Republican, I have never
endorsed a person run-
ning for state office in the
primary, -- Goldwater said
in a public statement.
But, he added, he was
breaking his rule in sup-
porting Steiger because
of "my deep concern over
the injection of religion in
this struggle" between
Steiger and Rep. John
Conlan, the opposing
candidate in the Senate
race which is to be deter-
mined Tuesday.
The Republican Party's
elder statesman had pre-
viously expressed pro-
found concern over the
tactics in the campaign
but had not endorsed
Steiger, who is Jewish.

The Phoenix Gazette,
one of Arizona's leading
dailies, in commending
Goldwater for his state-
ment, remarked in an
editorial that "Goldwater
is angry, if Conlan is
doing what Goldwater
says he is doing the
Senator has plenty of
reason for anger — and so
do other Republicans."

added that this meant that
the UN agreed with Is-
rael's view that the
number was excessive. He
said that Egyptian replies
on the other three com-
plaints, as relayed by
Siilasvuo, were satisfac-
tory.

Meanwhile, Gen. Ariel

that the Egyptians are

bank of the Suez Canal in
violation of the Israeli-

Cabinet Revie ws Sinai Pact

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Sinai agreement
signed with Egypt has
lived up to expectations,
and served the interests
of both-countries, Foreign
Minister Yigal Allon said.
His statement followed
the special Cabinet ses-
sion dedicated to the in-
terim agreement signed a
year ago.
The session opened
with a report by Allon.
Army Chief of Staff Gen.
Mordechai Gur reviewed
the military situation in
the Sinai, but no decision
was taken regarding the
present political situa-
tion there.
Most of the participants
in the discussion agreed
that the interim agree-
ment had been a positive
move and noted the easing
of the situation in the reg-
ion, the tightening of rela-
tions with the United
States and Egypt's efforts
for civilian development in
the Suez Canal zone.
However, there was
some ministerial criti-
cism of Egyptian viola-
tions of the accord and
the recent warlike state-
ment by President Anwar
Sadat.
Following the session
Allon said in a radio in-
terview that Israel bene-
fited in the agreement in-
that it could reorganize
its armed forces, and
rearrange new defensible
lines.
He expressed the belief
that the interim agree-
ment would eventually
lead to further agree-
ments in the region.
However, he added, such
agreements will have to

Allon discounted any

moves in the area.
Over the weekend in an
interview on Israel
Radio, former Defense
Minister Moshe Dayan
criticized the Sinai accord
saying that Israel gave
up land without receiving
anything in return.
Dayan said Israel failed
to get in the accord what
it should have, an end of
belligerency agreement.
He said it could still get
this agreement if the Un-
ited States made it a con-
dition for providing
American arms and
economic aid to Egypt.
