Dr. Joel Hamburger and
Dr. Jack Greenberg, co-
chairmen of the concert
committee, announced that
the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra again will be
featured at the concert.
Goodman, the world-
renowned clarinet virtuoso,
known as the "King of
Swing," was the first jazz
musician to take up a
simultaneous career as a
classical musician.
He acquired his first
clarinet at age 10, and
soon of was heard
playing a Haydn
transcription in a small
concert hall with a little
girl accompanying him on
the piano.
Though his successful
years as a jazz musician
established him in that field

interest in classical music.
At first he resumed playing
classical music, mainly for
fun, in 1938.

BENNY GOODMAN

Goodman recorded with
the Budapest String
Quartet and in 1939 com-
missioned Bela Bartok to
write an original work for
him. Entitled "Contrasts,"
it was recorded in 1940 by
Benny with Joseph Szigeti
for Columbia.
Goodman later com-
missioned clarinet concer-
tos from Paul Hindemith
and Aaron Copland. He
played with resounding
success as soloist with the
New York, Philadelphia,
Boston, Rochester, Buf-
falo and other symphony
orchestras.
Later, Goodman gave a
course at the Juilliard
School of Music in New
York. He also was a disc
jockey for a series of
classical record programs
over WNEW.

Kippur War.
