IN-ROME CATERING FOR
COCKTAIL PARTIES AND 'DINNERS

THE BIG WHIRLING
bird hovered above with a
giant custom-made 100-
pound, 20-foot Mr. Tony's
submarine sandwich
suspended on a cable . . . It
was quite a sight . . . for
another fine unfeathered
friend . . . Mark "The Bird"
Fidrych, sensational rookie
pitcher for the Detroit
Tigers, who has captivated
the imagination of a nation.
Occasion was down-to-earth
22nd birthday party given
for Mark by Michael and
Susie Gantz and Michael
and Jackie Kallen,
The wooden plank on
which Mr. Tony's sub-
marine sandwich lay . .
all dressed up in a tee shirt,
baseball shoes, feet with
pants, arm and hands with
a glove and curly hair atop a
drawing of Mark's face . . .
was built by Leo Kaplan at
his Standard Lumber .. . a
2x4, 20-foot-long platform
suspended below the
helicopter . . . "If it stays
on, it'll be fantastic," said
Leo. "I've got my fingers
crossed!" . . . Leo didn't
have to worry, it was
strapped on good by Allan
Marshall, public relations
man for Mr. Tony's.
A total of 150 guests had
a good time in the perfect
weather home and patio
yard of Mike and Susie
. . . but no one had a
better time than Fidrych,
quite a fine young man
who was determined that
this was his party and he
wanted it to be fun.
Dressed in blue jeans,
with his curly locks, the
nationally famous Fidrych
was like any other excited
kid having a birthday party
. . . and he loved the infor-
mality no end . .. The TV
cameras would have had a
field day, but Mark said no
and they weren't there.
On the other side of the
fenced patio, thousands of
youngsters and grownups
started gathering a la Tiger
Stadium . . . A few even
carried a banner that read,
"Happy Birthday Byrd!"
. . . and the kids yelled,
"We want the Bird!" . . .
He didn't disappoint them
. . . nosiree . . . not on his
birthday especially . . . as
he went out into the Rolling
Oaks park outside the Gantz
home and signed

,6560 ORCHARD LAKE ROAD AT WEST MAPLE (15 Mile)

autographs galore while
amateur photographers
clicked away at random.
Then a disco band called
"Night of The Living Dead"
played away for all the
neighbors to hear without
complaining . .. After all,
this was Mark "The Bird"
Fidrych's birthday party
. . . To spoil it would have
brought unceasing wrath!
The kids outside .sang
"Happy Birthday" to
Mark and he beamed . . .
Fame has come so big and
suddenly to the Tiger
rookie that one may
wonder with much reason
how he is reacting to it
. . . We asked him . . .
"I'm trying to be normal,"
said Mark. "That's the
only way I want to be and
hope to stay that way.
Gosh! I wouldn't want to
change for anything! This
is all so wonderful, but I
want to be myself, if peo-
-ple will only let me."
Mike and Susie and Mike
and Jackie gave a fun party
just like Mark wanted it
. . . and others having a
hand in it included Shelley
Morrison (Ron) and Diane
Ruby (Ed) who made the
vegetable platter and dip
. . . Janice Kaplan (Allan)
with her delicious
guacamole and tortilla chips
. . . Elayne Mangen (Bob)
•with a dip, Jewell Weiss
(Milton) and her popular
cheese dip . . . etc.
There was even a
birthday cake and gifts, too
. . . like bubble gum, a
wooden bird house from Leo
and Shirley Kaplan, record
albums, etc.
Wonder if Dick Purtan,
WXYZ radio's very fine disc
jockey and easily one of our
town's best, can pitch? . .
The crowd of kids saw him
and for a moment Dick took
part of the show by signing
autographs.
Whoever wrote that
Barbra Steisand and
Mark Fidrych should
make a movie because they
look alike must have been
drunk!
Disa 'n Data at Mark
Fidrych's 22nd birthday
party . . . Armed security
guards were lucky more
people didn't know what
was going on . . . As it
were, kids and grownups at
the park numbered an un-
told amount . . . Plenty of
"Take Me Out To The
Ballgame" popcorn, plus
candy apples . . . Kids on
rooftops . . Mothers in
neighborhood didn't have to
ask where their youngsters
were . . . they knew . . . If
anybody needed a lawyer,
there were plenty of them'
— all kinds . .. Phil Kaplan
the only brave guest diving
into the pool for a quick dip
.. . Other members of the
Detroit Tigers would have
been thltre but the same
date was short stop Tom
Veryzer's wedding day .. .
Asked where his mother
and dad, Bea and Abe
Kallen were, Barry Kallen
said, "Dad's on the couch —
where else?" . . . Jerry
Gurwin coming home from
playing golf, seeing the
police barricades and valet
parking sign, saying to wife
Lee, "I thought we moved

By DANNY RASKIN

into a quiet neighborhood."
. . . Noreen Green Adelson
telling of her Town Hall
series with a great lineup of
speakers for the new season
(hubby Allen defended Jack
Ruby) . . . Brother and
sister, Annette and Michael
Gantz disco'ing together
. . . Dave and Dorothy
Kaplan among "The Bird's"
favorite fans . . . WJR's
very fine announcer Gene
Elzy and wife Mildred a
handsome and most plea-
sant couple . . . Shirley
Kaplan looking great after
recent illness.
When things quieted
down and folks began to
leave, Doris Gantz Coleman,
Nat's wife, sat at the piano
as only she can . . . taking
over the living room for a
great song'session fun time
. . . As always, Doris can
sure tickle those ivories!
Mark "The Bird" Fidrych
is soon to have his most
severe test in life . . . If he
can weather all the
hullabaloo that has made
him a household name from
here to Timbuktu, Mark will
have done more than much
else possible . . . prove that
he is a man . . . and for real
. . . He's such a nice guy,
we sure hope he doesn't
change.
IRV GRODAN, bossman
with Danny Vassel at the
Post Office Inn, Telegraph
and 10 Mile, didn't always
have his suave mustache
. . . First time was for 15
years . . . then off for 10
years . . . and now back to
it . .. with hopes by many
friends of it being on for
good this time.
Speaking of the Post Of-
fice Inn, have you noticed
that $1.39 price for a Vienna
pastrami on knockwurst
sandwich with either a mug
of beer or homemade soup?
. . This is what you would
call a mighty excellent buy!
NEW YEAR'S EVE time
is coming early for Jack's on
Greenfield and 10 Mile .. .
with reservations already
being taken in a limited
capacity set up that permits
only 100 . . . A full evening
is being planned . . . All
you want all night of any
type drink sold in a bar
*(cocktails, beer, wine, cham-
pagne) . . . complete hot
and cold hors d' oeuvres, sit-
down dinner, entertain-
ment, items galore on a
lavish buffet breakfast .. .
Naturally the hats, favors,
noisemakers, etc. . . . $50
per person will include all
tips and taxes.
THE BIRDS IN THEIR
neighborhood are being
spoiled by Toby and Allan
Scheckter . . . They went to
Mama Zelda's on Southfield
at 12 1/2 Mile, had garlic
bread left on the table . . .
asked to take it home for
bird feeding in West Bloom-
field . . . Next morning, all
the feathery chirpers were
on the lawn singing "in
Italian" for more garlic
bread.
About Mama Zelda's, that
$3 off on any meal is more
unbelievable than the
coupon sounds . . . There
are complete meals on the
menu for $2.95, which in-
clude salad bar, ice cream or
sherbet, coffee, tea or pop

and the garlic bread . . . 1
Two people can eat very
well on just over $3 for
both!
YOU ARE CHARGED
for the small pats of butter
taken at the Advance
Nosherie cafeteria in the
Advance Building.
GEORGE WALDMAN,
counter man at Northgate
Delicatessen on Greenfield
and 10 Mile, writes of his
recent experience while
visiting London, England,
and going to world famous
Bloom's Delicatessen . . .
"The corned beef (salt beef
as it is called there), is of a
very bland nature and does
not compare to the taste or
savor of our meats. The hot
